PBR IA Top Prospect Games: Catcher Evaluations

The Prep Baseball Report IA Top Prospect Games event took place on Sunday, August 11, 2019. The event was held at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2020 grad class; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and numerous college coaches in attendance. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the PBR IA Top Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics: 

+  23 players ran sub 7.2 60-Yard Dash Times.
+  29 players recorded 85+ mph Exit Velocities
+  13 players recorded 80+ mph Infield Throws
+  11 players recorded 80+ mph Outfield Throws
+  7 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+  5 catchers recorded sub-2.1 Pop Times
+  23 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

Brandon Chapman, C, Des Moines Lincoln, 2020
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher. #98 ranked player in IA 2020 class. 8.07 runner. Taller square stance, slight crouch into hitting position, line drive swing plane, solid consistent contact, gap to gap approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Active and vocal behind plate, directs traffic well and works with pitchers, solid footwork, longer release on throws, accurate to bag, shows ability to receive and block, 73 mph arm strength with 2.06-2.08 pop times.

Nick Crandell, C/RHP, Johnston, 2020
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.24 runner. Upright stance, leg kick trigger, some stiffness in legs, avg. timing to swing, occasional hard contact to pull side of field, 90 mph exit velocity. Present strength to receive, solid blocker, quick exchange, slight one piece arm action, avg. accuracy to bag, 79 mph arm strength with 1.98-2.03 pop times.

Sam Funke, C, Iowa City Liberty, 2020
6-foot-2, 190-pound left-handed hitting catcher. #94 ranked player in IA 2020 class. 7.47 runner. Square spread stance, line drive swing plane, some lift through contact, flashes hard pull contact occasional pop in bat, 89 mph exit velocity. Avg. receiver behind plate, quick exchange with good footwork, throws uphill to target, avg. carry to bag, 72 mph arm strength with 2.13-2.28 pop times.

Drew Hillman, C, Pella, 2020
6-foot-3, 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.52 runner. Square stance with body and shoulder load, clean bat path, some lift through zone, showed hard contact to pull side of field, consistent bp during event, 83 mph exit velocity. Higher setup, strong blocker, avg. receiver, some length to exchange, solid/avg. accuracy to bag, 75 mph arm strength with 2.13-2.25 pop times.

Kody Kleve, C/RHP, South Winneshiek, 2020
5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #82 ranked player in IA 2020 class. 7.34 runner. Square stance, body and shoulder load, stiffer legs, avg. contact, spray contact off bat to both sides of field, 84 mph exit velocity. Solid receiver, avg. blocker, quick and exchange and release on throws, 76 mph arm strength with 1.95-2.04 pop times.

Lewis Peters, C, LaCrosse Aquinas (WI), 2020
5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.59 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, has body control, aggressive swing, line drive path, occasional pop in bat to pull side of field, 85 mph exit velocity. Solid receiver and blocker, some length to exchange, quick feet, accurate arm to bag, 73 mph arm strength with 2.08-2.20 pop times.

Mo Watson, C, Ankeny, 2020
5-foot-9,185-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.21 runner. Square stance, lower hand slot, compact swing with uphill path, short finish, produces mostly fly ball contact to pull side of field, 75 mph exit velocity. Side saddle setup, longer arm action, avg. receiver, solid athlete and quick to block, 72 mph arm strength with 2.08-2.19 pop times.
