KY College Prospect Showcase: Corner Infield Analysis

The Kentucky College Prospect Showcase took place on Sunday, August 2 and afforded close to 60 players the opportunity to showcase their abilities.

The following is a look at the group of corner infielders who participated in the event.

Maclaine Morris, 3B/RHP, Henderson County HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 138-pound right handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, good balance through contact, line drive type hitter consistently squared the ball up in his round, showed better bat speed in BP than 76 mph exit velocity off the tee would indicate, ran a 7.52 60-yard dash, may develop some power with added physical strength. Shows soft hands and moves fluidly defensively, long high-3/4 release with accurate throws, good arm strength for age at 81 mph across the infield, a player to keep a close eye on in the 2018 class.

Alex Markley, 3B/RHP, St. Xavier HS (OH), 2017
6-foot-2,240-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, utilizes a leg kick trigger with an aggressive stride, explodes with strong lower half and generates bat speed, creates lift at contact and shows power to the pull side, shows strength and has an aggressive approach, flashed his bat speed with an event best 98 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 8.10 60-yard dash. Shows average hands defensively, moves decently for size, has a quick exchange and gets rid of the ball with a short release from multiple arm slots, 73 mph velocity across the infield.

Jonathan Allen, LHP/1B, St. Xavier HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 170-pound right handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, shows occasional gap to gap power, loose hands create some barrel whip through the zone, registered an 80 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.44 60-yard dash. Shows good athleticism defensively, moves well around the bag, soft hands, accurate throws, 76 mph velocity across the infield, combination of offensive ability and athleticism at first base make him a player to watch in the 2017 class.

Dawson Hogan, 3B, Campbell County HS, 2016
5-foot-10, 170-pound right handed hitter hits from a slightly open stance with a short stride, loose hands generate bat speed, slight uphill path, swing creates some natural lift, took a good round of BP consistently barreling the baseball with a middle to pull approach, 80 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.37 60-yard dash. Shows soft defensive hands, good footwork, short high-3/4 release, accurate throws with 73 mph velocity across the infield.

Jake Newby, 1B, Mercer County HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 210-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, has a short swing path and shows power potential, raw strength in swing, 87 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.96 60-yard dash. Shows average hands defensively, has above average footwork around the first base bag, 74 mph velocity across the infield.

Mason Hazelwood, LHP/1B, Mercer County HS, 2017
6-foot-5, 205-pound left-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, long stride, level swing path with some length, shows flashes of occasional pull side power, 82 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.21 60-yard dash. Defensively, shows soft hands with decent footwork, long high-3/4 release with accurate throws, 87 mph velocity across the infield.

Rece Carter, LHP/1B, McCracken County HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, two-part swing with an early short stride, line drive type hitter with average bat speed, 76 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran an improved 7.83 60-yard dash. Shows soft hands defensively, good footwork around the bag with some athleticism, some accurate throws from a long high-3/4 release, 78 mph velocity across the infield.

Andrew Huff, 3B/RHP, Ryle HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, line drive type hitter with average bat speed, 68 mph exit velocity off the tee, showed an opposite field approach in BP, ran an 8.20 60-yard dash. Shows average hands and corner actions, accurate throws across the infield with much improved arm strength from previous event, 77 mph velocity across the infield.

Dalton Bearns, 3B, Hopkinsville HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, has a slight arm bar in load creating some length in swing, average bat speed, 80 mph exit velocity off the tee, line drive type hitter, ran a 8.23 60-yard dash. Shows average hands defensively, shorter 3/4 release with accurate throws, developing arm strength at 68 mph across the infield was an improvement from June event.
