Midwest Future Games: Team KY Game 3 Recap

By Chris Fuller

After starting the Midwest Future Games Event at Indiana University with two losses, Team Kentucky took the field for the final time against Team Indiana in search of its first win, which also served as the closing game of the event Sunday afternoon.

Cole Womack (’15 Lone Oak HS) got things rolling immediately with a lead-off base-hit to right field, and after Roman Millem (’15 North Oldham HS) hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out, Eamon Hannan (’15 St. Mary HS) lined a double to right-center scoring Millem from first base for a 1-0 Kentucky lead.

Zach Hurley took the ball for Team Kentucky and worked his 84-86 mph fastball and 68 mph curveball to keep the Indiana offense at bay during a scoreless two-inning stint.

Daniel Neal (’15 South Laurel HS) worked a scoreless third as Team Kentucky continued to hold a 1-0 lead.

That changed in the fourth as Indiana plated a run off of Ethan Stringer (’16 Beechwood HS) to tie the game at 1-1.

Womack tried to get things going again, leading off the fifth with his second hit of the game, a double to the left-center gap, but two ground outs and a fly out left him stranded in scoring position, and the game remained tied at 1.

Indiana would score the decisive runs in their half of the fifth.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Team Indiana delivered a bases-clearing double to break the game open and claim a 4-1 lead.  Indiana went on to add some runs late in the game for an 8-1 victory.

Team Kentucky went 0-3 on the weekend in its first appearance in the event and will be looking to pick up its first win next year with the group players from the Class of 2016 selected for the roster.
