Underclass Games: Team Maroon Position Player Analysis

The PBR Kentucky Underclass Games event took place on June 29-30 with a combination showcase/game play event at Sayre HS and the University of Kentucky. The event afforded players from around the state the opportunity to showcase their abilities and establish themselves as top players in their respective classes. The following is a look at the position players for Team Maroon at the event. This is position player analysis only. Those players who also pitched for Team Maroon had that evaluation featured in a previous article.
middle infielders
Landon Brewer, SS/RHP, R/R, Russell HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, drops hands at times to trigger swing, has strength in swing and creates some lift, flashes gap power, 77mph exit velocity, ran a 7.14 60, hit well in game play with an opposite field approach going 3-for-4 with a double (all hits to right field). Shows good hands defensively and moves well laterally, high-3/4 release with good arm strength, 83 mph velocity across the infield, accurate throws. Strong/athletic prospect with solid tools and good upside.
Michael Griffin, 2B/RHP, R/R, Ohio County HS, 2017
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitter hits from an open stance, squares front side with a short stride, compact swing with good extension through contact, loose hands, line drive type hitter, 78 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.88 60-yard dash, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single down left field line and reached base on an error on hard hit ball to SS. Has a solid swing; will need to improve foot speed moving forward. Shows adequate hands defensively, shows some athleticism in lateral movement, 74 mph velocity across the infield with accurate throws.
Rhett Sutton, SS, R/R, St. Mary HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, heel lift with no stride, stays quiet with a short swing path, line drive type hitter with average bat speed, 70 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.18 60-yard dash, went 0-for-4 in game play making ground ball contact in each trip to the plate. Shows average hands and footwork, long over the top release, developing arm strength at 67 mph across the infield.
Brock Littleton, SS, R/R, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2019
5-foot-8, 130-pound right-handed hitter hits from an open stance, long stride, line drive type hitter, offensive game will evolve with physical maturity, 66 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.71 60-yard dash, went 0-for-4 in game play with four strikeouts. Shows average hands defensively, fields ball on heels, short low-3/4 release, 70 mph velocity across the infield.
corner infielders
Eddie Satisky, RHP/3B, R/R, Lafayette HS, 2017
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride with a leg kick trigger, good use of lower half torque and shows strength in swing, shows occasional gap power, generates bat speed with frame, 87 mph exit velocity, ran 7.94 60, went 0-for-3 in game play making contact in each at bat. Shows soft hands, athletic corner actions, ¾ release with good arm strength, 84 mph velocity across the infield with accurate throws.
Reece Ison, 3B/RHP, R/R, Prestonsburg HS, 2017
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitter hits from an open stance and squares up with a short stride, uses strong lower half well, shows gap power, compact swing with good extension through contact, consistently squared the baseball in BP, 84 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.48 60, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to left field making contact in each at bat. Shows average corner actions at third base, playable hands, high-3/4 release with some accurate throws, 73 mph velocity across the infield (have seen up to 78), bat is his current best tool.
Sy Zickler, 1B/RHP, R/R, Brownstown Central HS (IN), 2017
6-foot-1, 210-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, long/uphill swing path with flashes of pull-side power, 72 mph exit velocity, ran a 8.03 60, went 0-for-3 in game play making contact in each at bat with a pull approach. Shows average hands defensively, average movement around the bag, ¾ release with 76 mph velocity across the infield, accurate throws.
outfielders
Josh Morgan, OF, R/R, Sayre HS, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride with good balance, good lower half torque in swing, line drive type hitter with gap power, impressed in BP consistently barreling the baseball, 85 mph exit velocity, should develop power game with additional strength, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to left field and possibly the hardest hit ball of the day lining out to 3B. Plays through the ball with athletic actions, long high-3/4 release, 78 mph velocity with some carry and accurate throws, frame and bat make him a definite follow in 2017 class.
Cole Hilt, OF, R/R, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitter hits from a wide base with minimal stride, level swing path with line drive production, maintains good balance through swing, 77 mph exit velocity, showed some speed with 7.01 60-yard dash, went 0-for-4 in game play with a strikeout. Plays through the ball in the outfield with athletic actions, long high-3/4 release, 75 mph velocity with average carry, accurate throws to the third base bag, good athlete.
Luke Smith, OF, L/L, Lincoln County HS, 2017
5-foot-7, 135-pound left-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, has an arm bar in load phase creating some length to swing, long/level swing path, 71 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.90 60-yard dash, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to left field and two strikeouts. Plays through the ball in the outfield, clean exchange with short over-the-top release, 70 mph velocity with some accurate throws to the bag.
catchers
Matthew Ellis, C, L/R, Shelby County HS, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed hitter showed potential to be a high-level 2018 prospect. Hits from an open stance and squares front side with a short stride, compact swing with some hand quickness, current line drive type hitter who should develop some power, above average bat speed for age, 82 mph exit velocity, ran an 8.13 60, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to RF and one strikeout. Defensively showed well above average arm strength at 77 mph, short high-3/4 release, footwork stays online, 2.00-2.11 pop times with accurate throws to the bag.
Garryn Wood, C, L/R, Franklin County HS, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound left-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a leg kick trigger and short stride, has loose and quick hands, line drive type hitter with occasional gap power, ran a 7.56 60-yard dash, went 0-for-4 in game play lining out hard in one at bat. Continues to make strides defensively, 72 mph arm strength with a quick transfer and release, quick feet, very accurate throws to the bag, 1.94-1.97 pop times, solid catch-and-throw skills that continue to get better.
Tanner Head, C, R/R, Eastern HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with no stride, creates some lift in swing, shows good gap to gap power for age, impressed in BP consistently finding the barrel, went 0-for-3 in game play with two strikeouts, ran a 7.32 60-yard dash, 79 mph exit velocity. Shows good athleticism behind the plate, quick glove to hand transfer and over the top release, solid footwork, 72 mph velocity with 2.00-2.08 pop times, very accurate throws to the bag, 2018 prospect to follow closely.
