Underclass Games: Team White Position Player Analysis

The PBR Kentucky Underclass Games event took place on June 29-30 with a combination showcase/game play event at Sayre HS and the University of Kentucky. The event afforded players from around the state the opportunity to showcase their abilities and establish themselves as top players in their respective classes. The following is a look at the position players for Team White at the event. This is position player analysis only. Those players who also pitched for Team White had that evaluation featured in a previous article.

middle infielders

Seth Bacon, 2B, R/R, North Oldham HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitter established himself as a potential high-level 2018 prospect. Hits from a balanced stance with a mid-length stride, good use of lower half torque in swing, line drive type hitter with present gap power, showed bat speed for age, 83 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.21 60, went 2-for-3 in game play with a single to RF and infield single. Shows adequate hands defensively, has a long exchange, long high-3/4 release , good arm strength at 81 mph across the infield, accurate throws.

Kyle Gammon, SS, R/R, Greenup County HS, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound athletic right-handed hitter showed his speed with a 6.81 60. Hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, good balance and solid swing mechanics, flashes occasional gap power, shows present bat speed for age, 79 mph exit velocity, went 0-for-4 in game play making contact in all at bats and reaching base on an error once. Defensively, shows soft hands with fluid feet and a quick exchange, works through the baseball well, showed average arm strength with accurate throws, 71 mph velocity across the infield, definite 2018 prospect to watch closely.

John Odom, SS, R/R, Beechwood HS, 2019
5-foot-6, 130-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, maintains goo d balance, line drive type hitter with average bat speed, 71 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.56 60, went 0-for-5 in game play making contact in all at bats and reaching on an error. Shows soft hands and moves well laterally, short high-3/4 release with 71 mph velocity, accurate throws, solid young prospect who will continue to evolve with physical maturity.

Jordan Tucker, SS, R/R, Prestonsburg HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, long, level swing path with average bat speed, line drive type hitter with a gap to gap approach, 74 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.52 60, went 0-for-4 in game play making contact in each at bat. Shows soft hands defensively, tends to field ball on heels, high-3/4 release with developing 69 mph velocity across the infield.

corner infielders

Austin Shepherd, RHP/3B, R/R, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, showed a mid to opposite field approach in BP and in game play, 84 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.03 60-yard dash, went 0-for-3 in game play flying out in each at bat. Shows soft hands defensively with athletic corner actions, all throws accurate across the diamond with a long high-3/4 release, 78 mph velocity, good body control with the ability to throw on the move, athletic defender.

Jake Hansen, 3B/RHP, R/R, Daviess County HS, 2018
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitter hits from an open stance and squares front side with a short stride, hands start close to body and load back, short swing path with a pull approach, line drive type hitter with a pull approach, 75 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.71 60-yard dash, went 0-for-3 in game play. Shows soft hands defensively, athletic corner actions, high-3/4 release with 75 mph velocity across the infield, accurate throws. Young prospect whose game will continue to evolve with physical strength gains.

Conner Ryle, 1B/LHP, L/L, Ryle HS, 2018
6-foot-3,185-pound left-handed hitter hits from an open stance and squares up with a mid-length stride, has average bat speed with an uphill path, shows occasional power to the pull side, 81 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.89 60-yard dash, went 0-for-3 in game play with two strikeouts. Defensively, plays through the ball in the outfield and showed 73 mph velocity from a short high-3/4 release. Average hands and feet at first base with 72 mph velocity across the infield.

outfielders

Kyle Browning, OF/RHP, R/R, Lafayette HS, 2018
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitter showed good combination of speed and arm strength Hits from a balanced stance, short stride, shows some hand quickness that generates bat speed, has some gap to gap power, 78 mph exit velocity, ran a 6.90 60-yard dash, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to center field. Plays through the ball well with athletic outfield actions, long high-3/4 release, good arm strength for age at 82 mph with carry, 2018 prospect to watch closely.

Jackson Caudill, OF, R/R, Franklin-Simpson HS, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitter hits from a wide stance with no stride, uses lower half well, above average bat speed, creates some lift with swing and shows gap to gap power, 82 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.26 60-yard dash, went 1-for-3 in game play with a single to right field. Defensively, shows some hesitancy in playing through the ball, high-3/4 release shows some arm strength at 81 mph with some accurate throws.

Matheo Lynn, OF/C, R/R, Larue County HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 195-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with minimal stride, showed improved use of lower half from previous event, line drive type hitter with flashes of gap to gap power, registered 79 mph exit velocity off the tee (8 mph increase from previous event), ran a 7.28 60-yard dash, went 0-for-3 in game play lining out hard to CF in one at bat. Participated as both an outfielder and catcher, plays through the ball, long over the top release with some accurate throws 71 mph velocity from OF, showed 74 mph velocity from behind the plate and 2.03-2.14 pop times, has made noticeable strides in overall game.

catchers

Landon Moberly, C, R/R, Lexington Catholic HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitter hits from an open stance with a leg kick and short stride, shows good bat speed through the zone, ball jumps off bat and displays gap to gap power, good round of BP consistently barreling the baseball, registered 82 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.12 60-yard dash, went 1-for-3 in game play with a double to deep left field. Solid defensive catcher with good receiving and blocking ability, 74 mph velocity with accurate throws to the bag, 1.94-2.00 pop times, one of the top Class of 2017 catchers in the state.

TJ Keck, C, R/R, Henry Clay HS, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter hits from an open stance with a short stride, short swing path, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach and good round of BP, shows some bat speed with 81mph exit velocity, ran a 7.28 60 yard dash, went 0-for-3 in game play making contact in each at bat. Showed 72 mph velocity from behind the plate with a short ¾ release, has room for quicker footwork, 2.08-2.12 pop times with some accurate throws to the bag.

Dalton Baker, C, R/R, R.G. Eversole, 2019
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitter hits from a closed stance with a long stride, below average bat speed with a long swing path, opposite field approach in BP, 63 mph exit velocity, ran a 8.02 60-yard dash, went 0-for-4 in game play reaching base on an error with three strikeouts. Defensively, showed 66 mph arm strength from behind the plate, pop times ranged from 2.26-2.41 with accurate throws to the bag.
