Unsigned Senior Showcase: Third Base Analysis

On Sunday, December 14 a total of 37 unsigned seniors convened at Legends Sports Academy for the PBR Kentucky Winter Unsigned Senior Showcase.  The group produced some very impressive performances which we will feature over the coming days.

The following is a look at the group of third basemen that participated at the event. This is position player analysis only.  Those first basemen that also pitched at the event will have their pitching evaluations featured in a separate article.

Josh Finerty, 3B/RHP, R/R, St. Xavier HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 200-pound prospect, right-handed hitter starts in balanced stance, uses a toe tap with short stride, explodes with lower half, loose hands show some quickness, showed jump in bat speed from previous event, took one of the most impressive rounds of batting practice of the day with hard line drives while flashing gap to gap power, 88 mph exit velocity, showed better speed at previous event than the 4.69 home to first time he posted at this event.  Defensively, shows good lateral movement in both directions, soft hands, quick exchange, short arm action through high ¾ slot produced accurate throws, 76 mph across the infield.

Scott Spurlock, 3B/RHP, R/R, St. Xavier HS, 2015
6-foot, 186-pound prospect, right-handed hitter starts in an open stance, uses a big leg kick trigger, significant pre-pitch hand movement, hands load back with slight bat wrap, uses lower half to generate some bat speed, showed gap to gap approach in batting practice, flashed bat speed with 89 mph exit velocity, posted 4.86 home to first base time.  Defensively, shows playable hands, good lateral movement in both directions, gets rid of the ball with shorter arm action through high ¾ slot, 77 mph arm strength across the infield, good body control on slow roller, most throws accurate.

Kyle Riesenberg, RHP/3B, R/R, Ballard HS, 2015
6-foot-4, 175-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a slightly open and wide stance, squares front side with a toe tap and minimal stride, level swing path with line drive production, likes to work the middle of the field, consistently squared the baseball in his round of batting practice, generates bat speed, 89 mph exit velocity off the tee, posted 4.83 home to first base time.  Defensively, shows solid corner actions, adequate hands, quick exchange, short arm action with ¾ to high-3/4 release, 72 mph arm strength across the infield that will need some improvement to play 3B at the next level.

Patrick McBride, RHP/3B, R/R, Hancock County HS, 2015
6-foot-5, 215-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, good balance, long/uphill swing path, 84 mph exit velocity off the tee, posted 4.87 home to first base time.  Defensively, shows average corner hands, fields ball on heels, long exchange, long arm action with high-3/4 release, very good arm strength across the infield, 87 mph with carry, accurate throws across the diamond.

Nic Caswell, 3B/RHP, R/R, Bullitt Central HS, 2015
5-foot-11, 185-pound prospect , right-handed hitter starts in open stance, squares front side with a short stride, some wrap in load, maintains balance, high hand finish, showed more consistent use of lower half than previous event, showed ability to make solid contact to all fields in round of batting practice.  Defensively, shows decent lateral movement and playable hands, gets rid of the ball quickly with short arm action and ¾ arm slot, showed increase in arm strength at 76 mph across the infield.

Harrison Hoskins, RHP/3B, R/R, Scott County HS, 2015
5-foot-11, 160-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with medium stride, minimal load, level swing plane, line drive type hitter, showed some bat speed with 87 mph exit velocity off the tee, posted 4.50 home to first base time.  Defensively, showed adequate hands, gets rid of the ball quickly with short arm action, high ¾ slot, 72 mph arm strength across the infield better suited for the second base position.

Tyler Wenig, 3B, R/R, Trinity Lutheran HS (IN), 2015
5-foot-7, 275-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with short stride, gets minimal involvement from lower half, short and choppy swing path, 72 mph exit velocity, 5.76 home to first base time.  Defensively, showed 62 mph arm strength across the infield with some accurate throws to first base.
