2018 PBR All-State: First Team Selections

The 2018 high school season ended a few weeks ago, and the high school state championships will conclude this weekend. Today we release the Prep Baseball Report Louisiana First Team All-State selections, with second and third team selections coming in the next few weeks.

The PBR All-State teams consists of one catcher, one first baseman, three infielders, three outfielders, and three pitchers. As well, the selections include the entire state of Louisiana, regardless of classification of the high school.

Here is the 2018 Prep Baseball Report Louisiana All-State First Team:

Catcher

CJ Willis C / 3B / Ruston, LA / 2018

Finished the year hitting .375, with a .531 OBP, three doubles, four home runs, 22 RBI, 28 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.

Louisiana State recruit. Currently ranked No. 2 in Louisiana's 2018 class, No. 43 Overall. Lean 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame, long limbs, with room to add strength. One of the top left-handed hitters in the country. Line-drive, gap-to-gap approach with fluid rhythm, bat speed, level path and strength at contact. Highly advanced hitter with present power. Athletic defender, durable frame with fluid hips, and quality catch and throw skills. Medium arm stroke into high-3/4 release with carry and accuracy on throws.

 

 

First Base

Cade Beloso 1B / John Curtis, LA / 2018

Finished the year hitting .483 with .615 OBP, seven doubles, 13 home runs, 38 RBI and 38 runs scored.

Louisiana State recruit, currently ranked No. 6 in Louisiana's 2018 class, No. 325 Overall. Strong 5-foot-11, 190-pound frame, powerful lower half, defined strength in wrists and forearms. Quality defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, quick and clean exchange, and plays through balls athletically. Short, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 79 mph. Left-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, leg kick and explosive lower half. Gap to gap, power type hitter with fluid rhythm, level path and explosive bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 99 mph. Also posted a 7.58 60-yard dash.

 

 

Infield

 

 

Cade Doughty SS / Denham Springs, LA / 2019

Finished the year hitting .375 with .481 OBP, 12 doubles, one home run, 30 RBI, 21 runs scored, 14 stolen bases, while only striking out six times in 104 at-bats.

Louisiana State recruit, currently ranked No. 1 in Louisiana's 2019 class, No. 6 Overall. Athletic 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame, wiry strength, room to add strength and size. Extremely advanced bat with barrel awareness, strength and bat speed. Hits to all fields and showing power to his pull side, posting an exit velocity of 95 mph as well. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, short stride and explosive lower half. Gap to gap, line-drive type hitter with fluid rhythm and a level path that creates natural leverage. Solid defender with average hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, and plays through balls well. Long arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 86 mph. Quality athlete that posted a 6.75 60 yard dash.

 

 

Gavin Dugas SS / Houma Christian , LA / 2018

Finished the year hitting .450 with .595 OBP, seven doubles, seven home runs, 27 RBI, 40 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases.

Louisiana State recruit, currently ranked No. 3 in Louisiana's 2018 class, No. 145 Overall. Strong 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame, defined strength in wrists, powerful lower half. Explosive athlete that posted a 6.58 60-yard dash. Quality defender with average hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange and plays through balls athletically. Short, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 81 mph. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced setup, smooth load, short stride, explosive lower half and quality balance. Line-drive, gap to gap type hitter with fluid rhythm, level path and explosive bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 95 mph.

 

 

Collin Burns SS / De La Salle, LA / 2018

Tulane recruit, currently ranked No. 13 in Louisiana's 2018 class. Lean 5-foot-10, 170-pound frame, athletic build with clear explosive fast-twitch actions. Quality athlete that posted a 6.87 60-yard dash. Left-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup with a smooth load, short stride, and balance throughout the swing. Line-drive type approach showing fluid rhythm with a aggressive compact stroke and uphill finish through the hitting zone, generating quality bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 97 mph. Athleticism translates well defensively, showing soft hands, fluid footwork, and clean, quick exchanges. Medium arm stroke into high-3/4 release with accuracy and solid arm strength, producing a positional velocity of 90 mph from infield.

 

 

Outfield

Wes Toups OF / ED White, LA / 2019

Louisiana State recruit, currently ranked No. 2 in Louisiana's 2019 class, No. 45 Overall. Lean, athletic 6-foot, 170-pound frame. Showed solid athleticism running a 6.65 60-yard dash. Left-handed hitter hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, short stride and solid balance. Short stroke with level path and decent rhythm; produced exit velocity of 84 mph. Outfielder with decent hands, fluid footwork, and clean exchanges. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with carry and accuracy, produced a positional velocity of 85 mph.

 

 

Hunter Leblanc OF / Hahnville, LA / 2018

Finished the year hitting .376 with .470 OBP, 10 doubles, three home runs, 25 RBI, 39 runs scored, and 32 stolen bases.

Southern Miss recruit. Currently ranked No. 14 in Louisiana's 2018 class. Physical 6-foot, 175-pound frame, strong, athletic build. Left-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, and short stride. Simple, direct path to the baseball with explosiveness and strength at contact. Line-drive, gap-to-gap approach with fluid rhythm and balance throughout the swing. High-level athlete with quick-twitch actions. Quality defender with tracking speed, instincts and projects to remain in the middle of the field going forward.

 

 

Braden Duhon OF / SS / Sam Houston, LA / 2019

Finished the year hitting .326 with eight doubles, 18 RBI, and 31 stolen bases.

Louisiana Tech recruit. Currently ranked No. 26 in Louisiana's 2019 class. Lean 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame, athletic build with room to add strength. Displayed solid athleticism running a 6.8 60-yard dash. Solid defender, works through the ball athletically with average hands, smooth footwork, and clean exchanges. Short arm stroke into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throw, producing a positional velocity of 84 mph. Left-handed hitter that works from a tall, open setup, leg kick and smooth load. Fluid, loose rhythm with slightly uphill path into the finish and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 78 mph.

 

 

Pitchers

Landon Marceaux RHP / Destrehan , LA / 2018

Finished the year 6-0 with one save, 1.26 ERA, 76 strikeouts to only four walks in 49.2 innings pitched.

Louisiana State recruit, currently ranked No. 1 in Louisiana's 2018 class, No. 32 Overall. Lean 6-foot, 180-pound frame, athletic build. Long, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and easy effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and finishes athletic. Fastball sits 88-92 mph, touching 94 mph, with late sink and advanced command. Breaking ball shows 11/5 shape, tight spin, fastball arm speed and sharp break at 78-80 mph. Also shows advanced feel for changeup with fastball arm speed and fade action at 79-81 mph.

 

 

Will Ripoll RHP / John Curtis, LA / 2018

Finished the year 9-0 with four saves, 0.98 ERA, and 89 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched.

Louisiana State recruit, currently ranked No. 7 in Louisiana's 2018 class, No. 344 Overall. Medium 5-foot-11, 171-pound infielder frame, athletic build. Right-handed pitcher with a long, loose arm action into a high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and finishes upright. Fastball sits 87-91 mph, touching 93 mph, with late run and command. Breaking ball shows sharp 11/5 shape with late break and fastball arm speed at 76-79 mph.

 

 

Chance Stone SS / Sulphur, LA / 2018

Finished the year 9-2 with a 1.58 ERA, 77 strikeouts and 10 walks in 79.2 innings pitched.

Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, currently ranked No. 4 in Louisiana's 2018 class. Average, athletic 6-foot, 185-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher with long, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction and lands square. Fastball sat 90-91 mph with arm side run, and control in the strike zone. Breaking ball looked to be a legitimate out pitch with 11/5 shape, sharpness, tight spin and depth at 75-77 mph. Also flashed a changeup with fastball arm speed and fade action at 81-82 mph.

 

Utility

Dax Ford OF / LHP / John Curtis, LA / 2019

Finished the year hitting .380 with .500 OBP, five doubles, two home runs, 28 RBI, and 20 runs scored. Went 1-0 with two saves, 0.62 ERA, with 31 strikeouts in 22.2 innings pitched.

Louisiana -Lafayette recruit, currently ranked No. 30 in Louisiana's 2019 class. Strong 6-foot, 180-pound frame, athletic build, developed athlete. Left-handed hitter that hits from balance, athletic setup with solid load, leg lift and powerful lower half. Solid rhythm, level to slightly uphill path with bat speed and advanced strength at contact. Solid defender with soft hands, developing footwork and clean exchanges. Long arm action into high-3/4 release with carry and accuracy on throws. Left-handed pitcher with long arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, in-line direction, lands square and finishes athletic. Fastball sits 84-86 mph, touching 88 mph, with life to the arm side. Breaking ball shows solid spin with depth and late break. Also shows a changeup with fastball arm speed, deception and life to the arm side.
