2023 Team Preview: South Beauregard High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, our staff is excited for the upcoming spring season.  Players and coaches have been working all fall and through December, in preparation for the upcoming season and as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Programs across the state have goals and aspirations to finish the year in Sulphur, LA at the LHSAA State Tournament, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes a reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams and players across the state, as we preview many of the great programs from Louisiana.  We will take you right up to the first pitch of this season with these team previews and we'll continue providing coverage throughout the spring.

Please keep checking back throughout the season, as we strive to be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across Louisiana.  Each week we will release our players of the week, as well as our Power 25 Rankings, which encompasses the top 25 teams in the state, regardless of class.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.  If you did not receive a questionnaire and would like to fill one out, please send an email to [email protected].

Team Outlook

South Beauregard finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 24-14, making the playoffs yet again, before exiting in the second round to Grant.  Head Coach Jeremy Deville has built quite the program in Longville, LA, as the Yellow Jackets are always a contender in Class 3A.  There's plenty of reason for optimism, heading into the 2023 season, as Coach Deville returns 8 position players and 10 pitchers from last year's club.  Senior Carter Caraway is a three-year returning starter for the Yellow Jackets, who sits in the low-80's with his FB, and will also be relied upon as a position player.  Junior Jace Duhon is a projectable 6'3" right-handed hurler with a FB already into the mid-80's, with likely more to come this spring.  Sophomore Clayton Folks is a 6'0" 195 lbs. physical southpaw with a FB in the mid-80's that South Beauregard is excited to bring back as well.  Fellow sophomore Christian Wold is another good looking 6'0" 190 lbs. prospect with a FB in the mid-80's.  Other guys that Coach Deville will rely on to log innings this spring include senior Ethan Beebe, juniors Cole Eaves and Brycen Dartez, as well as sophomore Cy Barrow.  Offensively, we mentioned above that Caraway, a three-year starter is back in the mix, but there are also a handful of other guys back, who enjoyed successful campaigns in 2022.  Junior OF Layden Sepulvado is a really good runner, who hit 5 HR's last spring and was an All-State selection.  Last season's lead-off hitter, junior SS Gunner Courtney, is also back after hitting at a .400 clip last year.  Fellow junior Bryce Deason is another explosive athlete and really good runner that should roam the outfield this spring.  Senior Carter Bolich should see time in the outfield and as a designated hitter.  In addition to these upperclassmen, there are a slew of underclassmen to keep an eye on as well.  Coach Deville's sophomore class looks to be a good one, as Folks and Wold will help the team offensively, in addition to their duties on the mound.  Sophomore Cy Carrow is another athletic two-way guy who can really run, and sophomore Luke Fontenot should see some time behind the plate.  Freshman Jed Henry is another young guy to monitor moving forward, as Coach Deville describes him as a great defensive player with a high baseball IQ.  District 4-3A is always a super competitive district and this year should be no different, as St. Louis, Kinder, Iowa, Westlake, and Jennings all return solid ball clubs.  When playoff time comes for South Beauregard, they'll also have to battle with schools such as Sterlington and Lutcher, who won last year's Class 3A state title.  Pitching and defense will lead the way for the Yellow Jackets this spring and it seems like this year's club has a lot of team speed, which bodes well for the way Coach Deville's clubs play offensively.  2023 looks like it should be another great year for South Beauregard, as they should be right in the thick of things come playoff time later this spring.
