2024 Team Preview: Captain Shreve High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the bayou state.  Each week, we will be releasing our players of the week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, and many more pieces of content.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

Captain Shreveport finished last year with a 22-14 overall record and earned a first round bye in the LHSAA Select D-I playoffs, before losing a three game series in the 2nd round to Rummel.  Expectations are high for Coach Sharp and his 2024 team, as they return seven starting position players and six pitchers from a year ago.  On the mound, the Gators return a top of the rotation type of arm in junior Shelton Harville.  The Louisiana Tech recruit is an athletic right-hander with a mid-upper 80's FB that he can cut and sink, to go along with really good feel for a sharp CB and SL, and will be the Gators #1 on the mound.  Seniors Rhyson Carroway will also be in the starting rotation, as will fellow senior John Chance, who can also be used in a closing role.  Seniors Sawyer Nelson and Jackson Wood saw limited innings last season, but both are poised to take on bigger roles in 2024.  Offensively, there's a lot to like about this year's Captain Shreve team as well.  Sophomore Andrew Sharp returns at shortstop and will be a catalyst at the top of the Gators lineup.  Senior Aron Gillum returns at third base and will also likely hit at the top of the order, and senior Chance Hatfield is another veteran back for another year of action and is a middle of the order type of bat.  Carroway, Chance, and Harville will also be relied upon offensively, in addition to their duties on the mound.  Junior Carter Reynolds is the leading man to win the starting catching job.  Junior Landon Kay will likely play a utility role on the infield, in addition to logging innings on the mound.  Underclassmen to keep an eye on include sophomore Denton Hester who has the potential to be an everyday player and hit in the middle of the order.  Fellow sophomores Jackson Gaskin, Reed Turner, and Brex Lopez should all factor into the success of this year's team as well.  District 1-5A is always one of the tougher districts in the northern part of the state with every team capable of beating each other on any given day.  The good news for Gator fans is that Coach Sharp and company turned in a really good season in 2023, and have a lot of guys coming back to keep the train rolling, so we fully expect for Captain Shreve to once again be a contender in 2024.
