The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Team Outlook

Zachary finished the 2023 season with a 18-18 overall record and entered the LHSAA Non-Select D-I playoffs as the #22 seed.  The Broncos season was ended in the first round by Central BR.  The good news for Zachary fans is that this year's team returns seven position players and four pitchers from last season's team, so experience will be on the Broncos side.  Head Coach Jacob Fisher always has his team's prepared to the fullest, and he credits this year's team for being a close-knit group with some of the best attention to detail and work ethic that he's seen during his time as the lead man for the Broncos.  Seniors Hudson Spangler and Talan Wallace are two veteran guys on the mound that Coach Fisher is excited to bring back.  Spangler, who served as Zachary's QB1 in the fall, racked up 44 K's with a 3.24 ERA last year and Wallace finished last season with a 1.15 ERA across 18 1/3 IP.  Spangler and Wallace will also be relied upon for their offense, in addition to their duties on the mound.  Another two-way guy for the Broncos is senior Sawyer Seguin, who throws from a lower slot with heavy sink & run on his FB.  Junior Jack Prejean was injured the majority of last season, but logged 35 innings as a freshman, so it'll be nice for the Broncos to have him back.  Sophomore Noah Sullivan potentially offers the most upside outside out of any of the guys on the Zachary staff.  He's got a long and lean 6'2" frame with a loose arm that works and a mid-80's FB to go along with feel for a tight-spinning breaking ball.  Offensively, the Broncos return the likes of Spangler, Wallace, and Seguin, who were mentioned above, in addition to senior Roman Albert and juniors Fischer Romero and Jake Lipscomb.  Junior John Bradley has stepped up behind the plate for the Broncos this year and is a physical left-handed bat.  Junior Skyler Andrews was stellar in centerfield for the Broncos last season and Coach Fisher believes that he's ready to take the next step forward with his offense this year.  Sophomore Collin Walls is a solid young player who should make an immeditate impact, both on the mound and in the field, for the Broncos this season.  A pair of sophomores to keep an eye on are Braden Sanders and Madden McClure.  Sanders needs some fine-tuning defensively, but could break into the lineup this season with his bat.  He's also a really good runner with an uber-projectable 6'5" 190 lbs. frame.  McClure started out last season as a bat off the bench, but eventually found his way in the lineup as a freshman.  Coach Fisher had eight guys last season that were in their fist year of playing baseball at the varsity level and five of those eight were just 15 years old.  The 2023 Broncos had a lot of youth and still were able to make the playoffs and nearly advanced to the second round.  Those eight guys are now a year older and a year more experienced, so we expect the Broncos to make a much deeper run in the playoffs this spring with the chance to advance to the LHSAA State Tournament.
