College Crosscheck: Week 2

David Seifert
Director of College Scouting

It was a big weekend in the Bayou state, with Connecticut and lefty Tim Cate visiting Southeastern Louisiana, Iowa with slugging outfielder Robert Neustrom at the ALLSTATE Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic and #23 LSU hosting #19 Texas. It was a great opportunity to potentially see 10 of our Top 100 College Prospects, as well as many other top draft prospects for future drafts. It was also a chance to watch a game at Alex Box Stadium for the first time in all my years of playing, coaching and scouting college baseball. Yes, Tiger fans, it’s true. I had never been to your amazing stadium. It’s now my second favorite college ballpark. After six games in three days, here is how the prospects looked:

11. Tim Cate, 6’0/185, Junior, LHP, Connecticut - Not the best look as Cate struggled from the onset. An excellent athlete with a long, loose arm action, he also has longer arms than most his height. He was out of sync with a late hand/glove separation and a longer arm swing, causing an inconsistent release point. His curveball was left up in the zone more often than not. Occasionally, it showed his customary Zito-like break, depth and angle, yet it wasn’t anywhere near the plus pitch he showed last summer for the USA Collegiate National Team. His fastball ranged from 88-92 mph, mostly working in the 89-90 range, also down a couple ticks from last summer. It had below average life and command, missing up often and around the edges most of the evening. He competed for five innings, allowing four hits, two runs, three walks while striking out six. Overall, Cate looked nothing like the potential first round pick that he showed this summer, but still remains a likely Day 1 pick. For a complete scouting report CLICK HERE>
