DENHAM SPRINGS – Last night the Prep Baseball Report staff was on hand as Denham Springs and Central(BR) battled into extra innings, eventually concluding with a bases loaded, two-out walk in the bottom of the 8th inning to give Denham Springs the district win.
Louisiana State recruit, 2019 SS/RHP Cade Doughty (Denham Springs) got the start on the mound for the Yellow Jackets and was impressive through 5 innings of work. Sitting 85-89 mph with his fastball and flashing a sharp breaking ball with 11/5 shape at 72-74 mph, Doughty struck out 7 batters, while surrendering 3 hits, 2 runs, and walked 3. At the plate, Doughty continues to show why he is one of the premier prospects in the 2019 class, going 1-for-3 with 2 intentional walks.
2018 OF/LHP Brant Husser (Central(BR)) got the start on the mound for the Wildcats and was effective through 4 and 1/3 innings. Husser sat 82-84 mph with his fastball, and showed a solid breaking ball with spin and depth at 73-74 mph. Husser finished his outing with 5 strikeouts, while surrendering 4 hits, 2 runs, and walked 5.
The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by 2017 IF Layne Didier (Denham Springs) who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and showed solid actions with arm strength across the infield. 2018 IF Dawson Albin (Denham Springs) also had a strong showing on the day, going 2-for-4 making consistent hard contact and scored a run. Defensively Albin showed average hands, fluid footwork with a short arm action into high-3/4 release with carry and accuracy on throws across the diamond.
2018 C/OF Carson Balthazar (Central(BR)) certainly made an impression on Tuesday. A physical, athletic build, Baltahzar hits from a balanced, athletic setup with a smooth load, and a strong, direct path. He finished the day 1-for-2 with a double, and a walk. 2017 1B Lakendrick Paul had the big offensive blow for the Wildcats. In the top of the 6th inning Paul drove a hard line-drive into left field, driving in two runs to tie the game up.
The Yellow Jackets would claim victory in the bottom of the 8th, as Cade Doughty would single with runners on 1st and 2nd to load the bases. His brother, 2017 C Braden Doughty (Denham Springs) would then come to the plate with two outs, and draw a bases loaded walk to end the game.
