Final Power 25 Rankings Release

Louisiana Scouting Director

This weekend concluded the 2018 Louisiana high school spring season, as 12 teams were crowned state champions at the annual LHSAA state championships in Sulphur, LA. With that, today Prep Baseball Report Louisiana releases its final 2018 Power 25 team rankings.

Here are a few highlights from the final top 25:

+ After repeating as state champions in Division-I, John Curtis HS also repeats as the No. 1 team in the final Power 25 rankings. Over the last two years the Patriots have been a dominant force in the state of Louisiana, and even made a run to the semi-finals in the nation’s premier high school tournament, the NHSI, in March. The Patriots’ offense was once again explosive, and deep, with threats up and down the lineup. Louisiana State recruit, and 1st team PBR All-State, 2018 1B Cade Beloso (John Curtis HS, LA) was certainly a devastating force in the middle of the lineup all year, but the depth of the Curtis’ lineup was on full display this weekend as opponents tried their best to prevent him from unleashing the big blow. In the semi-finals against Holy Cross HS (No. 23), the big blow came from 2-hole hitter, 2018 IF Jordin LaBruzza (John Curtis HS, LA), as the right-handed hitting middle infielder blasted a 2-run home run over the left field wall to put the Patriots up 4-0. Earlier in the contest, Tulane recruit, 2018 OF Logan Stevens (John Curtis HS, LA) got the Patriot offense rolling in the 2nd inning by scorching a lead-off triple down the right field line, which eventually led to a two run inning. Stevens finished the year hitting .280 with seven doubles, two home runs, and 23 RBI. Louisiana State recruit, 2018 RHP Will Ripoll (John Curtis HS, LA) was a dominant force in the state championship, as the future Tiger punched out 13 in a complete game win and earned MVP honors. The big blow came from one of the Patriots’ most consistent forces over the last four years, as Dayton recruit, 2018 C Jay Curtis (John Curtis HS, LA) hit a go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the 6th, which eventually led to the Patriots’ third state title in four years.

+ Other state champions to crack the final Power 25 list include Central(BR) HS, who once again caught fire in May, and repeated as the class 5A state champions, and the Wildcats check-in at No. 2 in the final ranking of the 2018 season. Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, 2019 IF Peyton Lejeune (Teurlings Catholic HS, LA) helped lead the Rebels to their third consecutive state title, and check-in at No. 7 in the final Power 25 ranking. Berwick HS claimed the 3A state title, and checks in at No. 11. Benton HS comes in at No. 13 after claiming the 4A state title, while Notre Dame HS checks-in at No. 14, after claiming the Division-III title, and Ascension Catholic HS finishes the season at No. 25, after taking home the Division-IV title.
