X-FACTOR
Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, 2017 LHP Brock Batty, returns for the Yellow Jackets in 2017. Batty has been a high-level performer both on the mound and in the middle of the Denham Springs lineup already in his career. Batty gives the Yellow Jackets a premium left-handed starter at the top of the rotation that can match up with anyone’s ace, pitch for pitch. His fastball will sit 82-86 mph with life and command to both sides of the plate. The separator for Batty is his ability to throw four quality pitches for strikes, showing advanced pitchability.

OUTLOOK
In addition to Batty, the Yellow Jackets also sport a young star in Louisiana State recruit, 2019 Cade Doughty. Doughty was a Preseason First Team All-State selection by Prep Baseball Report Louisiana, and is a fresh off a summer that saw him hit in the middle of the order for Team USA. In addition to the offensive firepower he provides, Doughty may also see mound time this spring, where he has seen his fastball touch 88 mph. Others to keep an eye on for big seasons are: 2017 C Braden Doughty, 2017 C Layne Didier, 2017 RHP Christian Carter, 2017 IF Cameron DeBate, and 2018 IF Dawson Albin.

BOTTOM LINE
Coach Mark Carroll has built the Denham Springs Yellow Jackets into a perennial power, and expectations are high in 2017. One of the most respected head coaches in the state, Coach Carroll has consistently produced winning ball clubs, and has moved dozens of players on to college baseball. However, the 2017 season hasn’t been without adversity yet, as the terrible floods in August hit the Denham Springs community hard. A resilient bunch though, the 2017 Yellow Jackets have turned their focus onto capturing a district 4-5A title, and ultimately a class 5A state title.
