Louisiana State Championships Preview: Class 5A

In preparation for this weekend's state championships, Prep Baseball Report will be looking at some prospects to follow if you find yourself attending games in Sulphur, LA. Today we look at the four team field of class 5A. With Brother Martin HS set to match up against Catholic(BR) HS and Sulphur HS against defending state and national champion Barbe HS in semi-final action, the stage is set for an exciting day of baseball.

Here are some prospects to follow this weekend in 5A action:

+LHP, Kale Breaux, Sulphur HS(2015)
A 5-foot-11, 170-pound left-hander and Mississippi State signee with a small, athletic frame and No. 2 in the ’15 class, No. 61 in the overall rankings. Clean, repeatable, athletic delivery with loose, fast arm out of high-3/4 release. Outstanding mound presence, works with great tempo, attacks the strike zone with three pitches from several different arm slots. Fastball will be 83-91 mph and settles in at 87-88. Will add and subtract off the fastball, sinking and cutting some. Shows outstanding feel for a breaking ball at 74-76 mph with tight spin, plus depth and command. Also will throw this pitch out of different arm slots with different velocities. Also showcases an outstanding changeup with fastball arm speed, deception and late fade action. Will throw any pitch in any count to any location. Understands how to setup hitters, becomes calmer when the situation gets tight, and it is clear he loves to compete.

+LHP, Adam Goree, Barbe HS(2017)
A 5-foot-11, 175-pound uncommitted left-hander with an average, athletic frame. Clean, repeatable, and athletic delivery with strong frontside and clean, fast arm. Fastball sits 82-86 mph with occasional life and competes in the strike zone. Breaking ball is inconsistent at times, but flashes a quality one with tight spin, depth, and late, hard break at 71-73 mph. Displays outstanding feel for changeup with fastball arm speed, deception with command to both sides of the plate. Currently ranked No. 2 in Louisiana’s ‘17 class and No. 47 in the overall rankings.

+LHP, Ross Massey, Catholic(BR) HS(2015)
A 5-foot-10, 175-pound left-hander with an average, athletic frame. Smooth, in-line delivery with slight arm wrap and quality arm speed into a high-3/4 release. Fastball sits 81-84 mph with command and occasional life. Breaking ball has a 1/7 shape that flashes tightness on occasion at 62-65 mph. Shows a feel for changeup at 67-68 mph with late, downer action. Has had an extremely successful high school career, pitching and winning in numerous big games over the past 3 years. Tulane signee and currently ranked No. 23 in Louisiana’s 2015 class.

+LHP, Blair Frederick, Brother Martin HS(2016)
A 6-foot, 180-pound left-hander with a thin, extremely athletic frame. Outstanding athlete with fast twitch actions. Above average arm speed out of a high-3/4 release and normal effort. Struggles to consistently repeat the delivery right now, but has managed to live in the strike zone early this season. Fastball sat 86-89 mph touching 90 with life at the end and deception created at release point. Showed a tight spinning slider at 76-78 mph with spin, depth and deception. Exciting prospect that projects very well going forward. Louisiana State commit and No. 2 player in the 2016 class.

+RHP, Keagan Gillies, Brother Martin HS(2016)
A 6-foot-8, 226-pound 2016 right-hander from New Orleans, LA. Extremely long, lean, and projectable frame with a clean, quick arm. Fastball sits 84-86 mph touching 87 with severe tilt, angle, and late hard cutting action. Breaking ball spins extremely well with 12/6 shape, quality depth, deception and hard, late break. Still a fairly raw product, as he is still trying to grow into his body, but he has enormous upside with present quality stuff. Tulane commit currently ranked number 8 in Louisiana’s 2016 class.

+RHP, Corey Gaconi, Brother Martin HS(2015)
A 6-foot-4, 210-pound right-handed senior and Southeastern Louisiana signee. Large frame with present strength and near college average athletic ability. Strike thrower that repeats the delivery well and has been a highly successful high school pitcher. Fastball sits 78-82 mph with stiffness in the arm action into a high-3/4 release. Breaking ball shows depth, spin, and shape at times sitting at 64-67 mph. Competitor that throws strikes and consistently gets high school hitters out.

+SS, Josh Smith, Catholic(BR) HS(2016)
A 5-foot-9, 170-pound middle infielder with small, athletic build. Advanced defender with actions, instincts, soft hands and college average arm strength. Shows an understanding of angles, hops and a feel for the timing of a play. Left-handed hitter with simple, compact stroke, near college average bat speed, level path that makes consistent hard contact and a gap-to-gap approach. Louisiana State commit and currently ranked No. 7 in the 2016 class.

+SS, Michael Kirsch, Brother Martin HS(2016)
A 6-foot-1, 200-pound uncommitted junior with a strong, athletic frame. Quality athlete that runs well and displays college average defensive ability. Shows soft hands, actions, and plus arm strength in the infield. Right-handed hitter with a gap to gap approach, flat bat path, and strength at contact.

+SS, Braden Comeaux, Barbe HS(2015)
A 6-foot, 165-pound middle infielder and TCU signee with a medium, athletic frame. Quality athlete that runs well and plays with instincts and great tempo defensively. Displays soft hands, actions, arm strength and an understanding of angles and hops in the infield. Right-handed hitter with short, compact stroke, adequate bat speed and finds consistent hard contact. Currently ranked No. 12 in Louisiana’s ’15 class and No. 149 in the overall rankings.

+INF, Kirkland Banks, Barbe HS(2017)
A 5-foot-10, 180-pound uncommitted sophomore with a small, athletic frame. Extremely fast twitch athlete that runs well and displays soft hands, actions, arm strength, and an advanced feel for infield play. Right-handed hitter with short, compact swing, bat speed and occasional strength at contact. Currently ranked No. 13 in Louisiana’s 2017 class.

+OF, Shane Selman, Barbe HS(2015)
A 5-foot-11, 185-pound compact athletic frame with a strong lower half and clear fast-twitch movements. Plus runner (6.5 60yd) with tracking instincts, aggressive nature, and arm strength as an outfielder. Right-handed hitter, swing gets long at times but has plus bat speed, pull power and creates good leverage. Rare player that throws left and hits right. Plays extremely hard, quality baseball IQ, and has won a ton including state championships and a national championship with Barbe HS in Lake Charles, LA. McNeese State signee currently ranked number 21 in Louisiana’s 2015 class.

+C, Hunter Feduccia, Barbe HS(2015)
A 5-foot-10, 180-pound catcher with an average athletic body. Solid defensive catcher with quality athletic ability, receives and blocks well and college average arm strength. Left-handed hitter with short, compact stroke, bat speed, quality bat path and a gap-to-gap approach that swings and misses rarely. LSU-Eunice CC commit currently ranked number 47 in Louisiana’s 2015 class.
