Last night the Prep Baseball Report Louisiana staff headed to Lake Charles, LA, as the three-time defending class 5A State Champion Barbe Bucs hosted district rival Lafayette.

No. 1 in the PBR Power 25, Barbe entered the game 18 and 2. While, a highly ranked club in the preseason, Lafayette has struggled to find their rhythm early in 2017, entering the game 8 and 11.

2017 RHP Cavin Courville would get the start on the mound for Barbe, and would give the Bucs 2.1 innings. He would be relieved by 2020 RHP/IF Davis Meche, who would go the distance, allowing 0 runs. Courville showed interesting stuff early in the contest. An inexperienced senior to this point, he showed  a clean arm action into high-3/4 release, sitting 83-86 mph with his fastball, and a tight spinning breaking ball with depth and solid command a 72-76 mph.

Barbe would get out to a fast start, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning off 2017 RHP Joseph Battaglia. Lafayette would immediately respond with two runs in the top of the 2nd, but that would be all the scoring the Lions would find, eventually falling 10-2.

Lamar recruit, 2017 3B Kirkland Banks (Barbe) would reach base in all three at-bats, scored three runs, added multiple stolen bases, and posted a 4.07 home to 1st time on drag bunt from right side.

Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, 2017 1B Slate Fuller (Barbe) would finish the day 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

2018 SS Bryan Lawerence (Barbe), was extremely impressive defensively, making a few highlight reel plays, showing actions, soft hands, advanced feel for infield play and solid arm strength with accuracy across. Offensively he would finish the day 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a run scored.

McNeese State recruit, 2018 OF Antonio Gauthier (Barbe) would finish the day 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, a stolen base, a posted a 3.98 home to first time from the left side.

2018 SS Connor Simon (Lafayette) showed actions, fluid footwork and feel for infield play during pregame. Offensively he would finish the day 1-for-3 with an RBI, posting a 4.33 home to 1st time from the right side.
