This week, On the Hunt, takes a look at 5 2019 players and one talented 2020 infielder. The 2019’s are highlighted by four power arms that show the upside coveted by every major program, and will be making an impact this summer as recruiters catch them in action. Finishing off the group is a talented catcher from New Jersey with excellent defensive skills. In all, five states are represented including Wisconsin, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas, and New Jersey.
Jack Washburn, RHP, Webster HS, WI, 2019
The son of former big league pitcher, Jarrod Washburn, drew the attention of several schools at a field nearly 40 minutes away from any other last fall in Fort Myers, and he did not disappoint. Those in attendance were treated to a future power right arm that already shows great quickness, and pumped fastballs that ran up to 86 mph on the day with much more to come in the future. Washburn worked exclusively out of the stretch and attacked hitters with his fastball early in counts before showcasing a sharp slider at 73-75 with tilt that has a chance to be a plus pitch in the future. Washburn is still very young in the face, and has very long arms and legs that look like they are still growing. What really stuck out about Washburn was his athleticism on the mound, and even more so his bulldog mentality in challenging every single hitter. Washburn is a pitcher who is only just now starting to realize his major talent, and it will be fun to watch him bloom into a frontline power pitcher at the next level.
