Power 25 Rankings Updated

Trey Sofio
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2018 regular season ended on Saturday, and playoff action around the state kicks off today. As teams begin the journey to see who will be crowned this year’s state champion in early May, its time for the final regular season update to the Power 25 team rankings. Although, there hasn’t been much shakeup in this week’s list, here are a few highlights.

+ Zachary HS (31-2) finishes the regular season atop the Power 25 and head into the class 5A playoffs as the No. 1 Overall seed. The Broncos have proven to be the most complete, and consistent, team in the state this year, and are in prime position to capture a state championship in 2018. Led by Louisiana State recruit, 2019 C Alex Milazzo (Zachary HS, LA), Southern recruit, 2018 2B Rhett Hebert (Zachary HS, LA), LSU-Eunice CC recruit, 2018 OF River Town (Zachary HS, LA), and 2019 SS Collier Cranford (Zachary HS, LA) the Broncos’ greatest strength as it enters the playoffs is there ability to play defense at an extremely high level, in addition to a talented and deep pitching staff led by 2018 RHP/3B Joey Blanchard (Zachary HS, LA), which makes runs tough to come by for opponets.

+ District 3-5A lands four teams in the top ten of the final regular season Power 25 rankings. Sam Houston HS (28-5), Barbe HS (26-8), Acadiana HS (24-10), and Sulphur HS (25-9) are all extremely talented, and are battle tested as they enter playoffs after challenging regular season schedules.

+ John Curtis HS (26-4) and Catholic(BR) HS (25-8) met in last year’s Division-I state championship, and once again find themselves as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds entering the playoffs.  The Bears defeated the Patriots in a regular season matchup earlier this year, but the Patriots haven’t lost an in-state game since March 10th. Louisiana State recruit, 2018 1B Cade Beloso (John Curtis HS, LA) is dialed in offensively entering the playoffs, homering three times last week, and is hitting .456 with 11 home runs and 28 RBI on the year.

+ The Division-II state championship race should be extremely competitive, as the division features several talented clubs that could make runs in the next few weeks. University Lab HS (28-5) has played at a high level all year, and is the highest ranked non-5A team in the Power 25, checking in at No. 4 in the final regular season ranking. The Cubs will have plenty of challengers though, as Parkview Baptist HS (27-3), Teurlings Catholic HS (22-9), St. Thomas More HS (26-8), De La Salle HS (27-7), St. Charles Catholic HS (25-8), St. Louis HS (21-12), and ED White HS (23-7) are all talented clubs with winning cultures and championship experience.
