Stock Watch: 2021s To Watch

Today, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana takes a look at three 2021s prospects that have already impressed early in their young careers. Throughout the spring and summer months, our scouting staff has been on the road scouting high school and legion games, as well as select ball tournaments and its own summer event schedule.

Let’s dive into the young freshmen featured in this week’s Stock Watch:

Joshua Stevenson OF / LHP / St. Thomas More, LA / 2021

Athletic 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame, long levers with fast-twitch actions. Advanced athlete with fluid runner with long strides. Outstanding defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, advanced, natural instincts, and already displays quality range. Left-handed hitter that hits from athletic setup, smooth load, and short stride. Line-drive approach, consistently finds the barrel with simple, direct and level path to the baseball, showing solid bat speed, and developing strength.

Gavin Schulz SS / 2B / Holy Cross, LA / 2021

Average 5-foot-6, 130-pound frame with room for continued growth and strength. Right-handed hitter has a relaxed, tall, balanced stance. Simple, smooth load, short stride, good lower half weight transfer with direct path producing exit velocity of 78 mph. Premium defender for age with soft hands active feet, plays through the ball with clean exchanges. Throws from a short, high-¾ arm stroke with accuracy and carry at 82 mph. Also showed athleticism running a 7.15 60-yard dash. Right-handed pitcher works from high-¾ slot with a medium arm stroke. Smooth rhythm, directional delivery with some effort, lands slightly open with an athletic finish. Arm works well from back to front with fastball was mostly straight action at 74-77 mph. Breaking ball showed 11/5-shape with early action and near fastball arm speed, located down in the zone at 62-63 mph. Change up showed fading action with fastball arm speed at 67-71 mph.

Benjamin Tate LHP / 1B / Teurlings Catholic, LA / 2021

Lean 6-foot, 165-pound frame. Left-handed pitcher throwing from a high-3/4 release, and solid balance. Short arm action with some stiffness and regular effort in delivery. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, with in-line direction landing square, while finishing athletically. Fastball was commanded and sat 78-80 mph, with slight arm side action. Slider was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 71-73 mph. Left-handed hitter that hits from tall balanced setup, subtle shift of weight, short stride and solid balance. Loose, fluid rhythm with uphill path, produced exit velocity of 77 mph. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 71 mph. Also posted a 7.55 60-yard dash.
