Louisiana Scouting Director
The Underclass Games took place on Tuesday, July 15th, at Tulane University, in New Orleans, LA. The invite only event saw ninety uncommitted prospects perform in front of dozens of college coaches and the Prep Baseball Report scouting staff.
Tuesday’s Underclass Games was loaded with top-level underclass talent from the state of Louisiana. Today, our scouting staff takes a look at a few of the top statistical performers from the event.
2019 OF Terry Tolliver, Jr. (Parkview Baptist HS, LA) opened eyes at the Underclass Trials earlier this summer with his blazing speed, but the left-handed hitting outfielder set the bar a little higher, kicking off the event with a 6.43 60-yard dash time.
Although still very young, 2021 OF Kael Babin showed high-level athleticism, and quick-twitch actions, as the rising freshmen started his day by posting a 6.58-60 yard dash time.
2018 RHP Grant Upton (University Lab HS, LA) has been a fast riser in Louisiana’s 2018 rankings, and showed why on Tuesday. The strong 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-hander sat 84-88 mph with his fastball, showing downward tilt with life to the pitch. A strike-thrower, Upton showed a sharp slider at 79-81 mph, allowing him to work a relatively clean inning of work.
2019 SS Collier Cranford (Zachary HS, LA) will represent Louisiana next week in the PBR Future Games, and the athletic middle infielder certainly stood out on Tuesday. An athletic 6-foot, 162-pound frame, Cranford posted a 6.8 60-yard dash time, showed actions with fluid footwork in the infield, and arm strength with carry across the diamond, posting an 88 mph positional velocity.
2019 OF/RHP Damon Fountain (St. Louis HS, LA) will also represent Louisiana at next week’s Future Games, and the toolsy two-way prospect had a big showing on Tuesday. An athletic 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame, Fountain posted a 6.7 60-yard dash, showed a long, loose arm stroke with plus carry on throws from the outfield, posting a 91 mph positional velocity. Offensively, the right-handed hitter showed quality bat speed with long levers, posting a 94 mph exit velocity. Relatively new to the mound, the right-hander is a projectable as they come. Working a clean inning of work, he pitched 84-86 mph with late life to the fastball, and flashed ability to spin quality breaking ball with sharpness at 75-76 mph.
2019 SS/OF Ron Franklin (Rummel HS, LA) stands out with his long 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame and clear athleticism. He displayed that athleticism early, posting a 6.72 60-yard dash, as the rangy prospect showed fluid, fast-twitch actions. Although still a developing product, Franklin showed signs of a premium defend tool in the infield, as the feet and hands worked well together, and showed a loose arm stroke with easy carry across the infield.
2019 3B Will Spears (St. Augustine HS, LA) has flown somewhat under the radar before Tuesday, which should certainly change now. The athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pound infielder started his day with a 6.83 60-yard dash time, and showed an advanced defend tool with actions, fluid footwork, and plus arm strength with carry on throws, posting an 88 mph positional velocity. Although still somewhat crude offensively, the right-handed hitter showed bat speed with strength at contact, posting an 88 mph exit velocity.
A complete recap of the event will be coming in the following weeks.
