Underclass Trials: Catcher Analysis

At the end of May, the annual Underclass Trials was held at St. Thomas Aquinas high school in Hammond, LA. Today, we look at a more in-depth analysis from the underclass catchers in attendance at the event.

+ Austin Arceneaux, C,  Ascension Episcopal, 2019
Long 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, with slight bat wrap and short stride. Line drive type approach with slight uphill path, with developing rhythm and bat speed, produced exit velocity of 67 mph. Catcher with solid hands and developing footwork and exchanges. Short arm action into high-¾ release with some accuracy on throws and developing arm strength, recording a positional velocity of 74 mph; pop time of 2.18-2.2. Ran a 7.36 60-yard dash.

+ Kyle Conigliaro, C, St. Paul’s, 2019
Athletic 6-foot, 175-pound frame, strong build. Quality defender with soft hands, quick footwork, quick and clean exchanges, and athleticism. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 76 mph and pop time of 2.00-seconds. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load and short stride. Line-drive, gap to gap type hitter with fluid rhythm, and a short, slightly uphill path with bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 80 mph. Also posted a 7.83 60-yard dash.

+ Hunter Giroir, C, West Feliciana, 2020
Average 5-foot-7, 145-pound frame. Showed athleticism running a 7.01 60-yard dash. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, works backwards with toe tap, and short stride. Line drive type approach with level path, early rhythm and solid bat speed for age, producing exit velocity of 78 mph. Catcher with solid hands and clean exchanges. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with inconsistent accuracy and developing arm strength recording a positional velocity of 75 mph and a pop time of 1.90-seconds.

+ Bryce Grizzaffi, C, Central Catholic, 2019
Medium 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame. Solid defender with average hands, fluid footwork, clean exchanges and plays through balls athletically. Short arm action into high-¾ release with accuracy and solid arm strength, recording a positional velocity of 76 mph from the infield. Also displayed outstanding catch and throw skills as a catcher, throwing 77 mph from the crouch, and posting a pop time of 1.93-seconds. Right-handed hitter that hits from crouched, open setup, working backwards in load and average balance. Line drive type approach with short and developing rhythm, posting a exit velocity of 76 mph. Ran a 7.36 60-yard dash.

Medium 5-foot-7, 175-pound frame. Right-handed hitter that hits from athletic, balanced setup, with no load and short stride. Line drive type approach with level path, with developing rhythm and bat speed, produced exit velocity of 74 mph. Catcher with developing hands and footwork with slow exchanges. Short arm action into high-¾ release with accuracy on throws and developing arm strength, recording a positional velocity of 68 mph; pop time of 2.15-2.25. Ran a 8.00 60-yard dash.

Long arm action into high-¾ release with some accuracy on throws and developing arm strength, recording a positional velocity of 70 mph; pop time of 2.2-2.25. Displayed athleticism running a 7.0 60-yard dash.

Thick 5-foot-11, 207-pound frame. Right-handed hitter that hits from tall, open, balanced setup, loading with leg lift and slight arm bar. Gap-to-gap type approach with slight uphill path, early rhythm and solid bat speed, produced exit velocity of 82 mph. Catcher with developing hands and footwork with slow exchanges. Long arm action into high-¾ release with some accuracy on throws and developing arm strength, recording a positional velocity of 67 mph; pop time of 2.15-2.21.
