Underclass Trials: Top Overall Prospects

On Saturday, May 21, more than 40 underclass prospects from across the state of Louisiana participated in the Prep Baseball Report Underclass Trials at St. Thomas Aquinas high school in Hammond, LA.

Today, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana takes a look at the top overall prospects that were in attendance.
Top Prospects
1. Cade Doughty, INF, Denham Springs HS(2019)
A 6-foot-1, 180-pound infielder with a strong, athletic frame that projects well. Extremely advanced bat with barrel awareness, strength and bat speed that put on impressive round of batting practice. Hit to all fields and showed power to his pull side, posting an exit velocity of 93 mph as well. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, short stride and explosive lower half. Gap to gap, line-drive type hitter with fluid rhythm and a level path that creates natural leverage. Solid defender with average hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, and plays through balls well. Long arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 85 mph. Quality athlete that posted a 6.75 60 yard dash.
2. Jake Hammond, RHP/1B, Ouachita Christian HS(2018)
A 6-foot-3, 230-pound right-handed pitcher and first baseman with a large, physical frame and strong lower half. Significantly improved his stock heading into his rising junior summer. Right-handed pitcher with long arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and finishes athletic. Fastball sat 87-88 mph with heavy sink and quality angle. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with sharp break, fastball arm speed, tight spin and deception at 73-76 mph. Also showed solid feel for changeup with fastball arm speed and fade action at 78-81 mph. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load and short stride. Gap to gap, power type hitter with fluid rhythm, a level path that creates solid leverage, and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 90 mph. Solid defender with average hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange and plays through balls. Long arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 83 mph. Also posted an 8.04 60 yard dash.
3. Lamarcus Jones, OF, Dutchtown HS(2019)
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound outfielder with a strong, athletic frame. Explosive, fast-twitch athlete that posted a 6.65 60 yard dash. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic stance, smooth load, and short stride. Line-drive, gap to gap type hitter with some rhythm. Still a fairly raw product as a hitter, but shows bat speed and strength at contact that produced an exit velocity of 84 mph. Solid defender with average hands, fluid footwork, and clean exchange. Long arm action into over the top release with accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 82 mph.
4. Clint Hargrave, C/INF, Ouachita Christian HS(2019)
A 5-foot-10, 160-pound catcher and infielder with a strong, athletic frame. Outstanding defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, and quick, clean exchanges. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 74 mph and a pop time of 2.01. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, and leg swing. Line-drive type hitter with fluid rhythm, short path and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 76 mph. Also posted 7.71 60 yard dash.
5. Roderick Coffee, OF, Central(BR) HS(2018)
A 6-foot-1, 150-pound outfielder with a lean, athletic, projectable frame. Quality defender with average hands and clean exchanges. Long, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and life on throws producing a positional velocity of 85 mph. Right-handed hitter that hits from tall, athletic stance, smooth load, and leg kick. Gap to gap, power type hitter with some rhythm, slightly uphill path with length and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 92 mph. Also posted a 7.33 60 yard dash.
6. Jack Merrifield, RHP/INF, Dutchtown HS(2018)
A 6-foot, 180-pound right-handed pitcher and infielder with an athletic, strong frame. Long arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, and lands open. Fastball sat 84-85 mph with late life. Breaking ball showed 10/4 shape with sharp break and near fastball arm speed at 67-71 mph. Also showed a changeup with sink action and near fastball arm speed at 71-74 mph. Solid defender with average hands and clean exchanges. Short arm action into ¾ release with accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 80 mph. Switch hitter that hits from athletic, open setup with smooth load and short stride. Line-drive type hitter with some fluidity to rhythm, short path and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 81 mph. Also posted a 7.66 60 yard dash.
7. Lee Blosser, LHP, Jesuit HS(2018)
A 6-foot-4, 212-pound left-handed pitcher with a large, projectable frame. Long arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction and lands square. Fastball sat 80-82 mph with late run and solid tilt. Breaking ball showed 2/8 shape with gradual break and fastball arm speed at 65-69 mph. Also showed a changeup with fastball arm speed at 75-76 mph.
8. Michael Stutes, OF, Northshore HS(2018)
A 5-foot-7, 145-pound outfielder with a medium, athletic frame. Quality athlete that posted a 6.9 60 yard dash and showed solid athletic actions. Left-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup with a smooth load, short stride, explosive lower half and quality balance. Line-drive, gap to gap type hitter with fluid rhythm, barrel awareness and a short, level path. Recorded an exit velocity of 84 mph. Quality defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, and quick, clean exchanges. Long, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 78 mph.
9. Alexander Wiltz, SS/RHP, Holy Cross HS(2018)
A 5-foot-10, 155-pound infielder and right-handed pitcher with a lean, athletic frame. Outstanding defender with soft hands, quick and fluid footwork, quick and clean exchange, and plays through balls athletically. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 83 mph. Right-handed hitter that hits from athletic setup with smooth load, short stride, and solid lower half. Line-drive type hitter with short, downhill path, solid rhythm and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 84 mph. Also posted a 7.33 60 yard dash. Right-handed pitcher with long arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and finishes athletic. Fastball sat 78-81 mph with slight cutting action. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with early break and near fastball arm speed at 64-65 mph. Also showed a changeup with fade action and near fastball arm speed at 65-66 mph.
10. Jace Pendarvis, RHP/OF, Live Oak HS(2019)
A 5-foot-10, 150-pound outfielder and right-handed pitcher with a projectable, strong frame. Long, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and finishes athletic. Fastball sat 80-83 mph with slight run. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with gradual break and fastball arm speed at 69-70 mph. Also showed a changeup with fade action and near fastball arm speed at 68-69 mph. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load and short stride. Line-drive type hitter with rhythm, short path and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 81 mph. Quality defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchanges and fields athletically. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and some carry on throws producing a positional velocity of 84 mph. Also posted a 7.2 60 yard dash.
10. Carson Balthazar, OF, Central(BR) HS(2018)
A 6-foot, 165-pound outfielder with a physical, athletic frame. Quality defender with average hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange and plays through balls well. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 80 mph. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, leg kick, and strong lower half. Line-drive, gap to gap type hitter with fluid rhythm, level path and explosive bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 86 mph. Also posted a 6.8 60 yard dash.
