PBR Louisiana State Rankings Update: 2024 Class (February 2024)

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The winter season has come to an end for high school baseball prospects across the country, which means it's time for the spring high school season to kick-off and it means it's time for an update to our state rankings.  We spent the winter evaluating prospects at our events, and we also kept close tabs on their performances for their resepective high school programs.  This update for the 2024 class is a modest one, especially at the top, as there is one lone newcomer to the Top 10.  We've expanded the list to 235 prospects and although there wasn't a lot of movement at the top, there was still plenty of risers in the entire group.  Below, we give a snapshot of the Top 10 and we also highlight a few players who increased their stock coming out of the winter break.

RISERS & NEWCOMERS

+ 2024 SS/RHP Griffin Hebert (Sam Houston HS)

The Louisiana-Lafayette recruit has always been a quality position player, but he provided an eye-opening look on the mound this past Decemeber at a Sam Houston intersquad.  Hebert worked quick and pounded the zone with primarily a two-pitch mix that consisted of a 88-93 mph FB and a sweeping 75-77 mph SL with spin rates up to 2576 RPM's.  He's made a jump physically and has always been a quick-twitched athlete, and now provides upside on the mound as well.

+ 2024 LHP Nik Toups (Sam Houston HS)

Much like his teammate above, Toups showed well at the same December intersquad scrimmage at Sam Houston HS.  The big-bodied southpaw displayed a loose & easy arm action with a FB in the 87-91 mph range with heavy arm-side sink and run, and he flasehd a much improved 76-79 mph CB, while showing good feel for a late-fading 80-81 mph CH.  The Southeastern Louisiana recruit moves up six spots in this update to #26 overall.

+ 2024 RHP Hudson Spangler (Zachary HS)

Spangler is still getting back into baseball shape, after leading the Broncos to the State Title game in football, as the team's QB1.  We had the opportunity to see his first January outing in a Zachary intersquad and it was a really good one.  He worked his FB in the 85-88 mph range with ride and life through the zone and he tunneled a 79-81 mph SL well off of it, as it showed the potential to be a future swing & miss pitch.  The LSU-Eunice recruit moves up to #50 overall in this update.

+ 2024 MIF Ryan Gregson (Hahnville HS)

There were many winners out of our Preseason ID events and Gregson was one of those guys.  The Hahnville product attended our New Orleans Preseason ID and kicked the day off by blazing an event-best 6.66 in the 60.  At the plate, he used a simple & short stroke to hit balls on a line from gap to gap that resulted in exit velocities up to 91.2 mph.  He's a really good uncommitted senior in the state's 2024 class to follow this spring and moves in to the Top-100 of our State Rankings at #97 overall.
