St. Peter’s A ‘Dream Come True’ For Constance

BRENTWOOD, N.H. - A change of heart has Caleb Constance heading in a different direction.

“Rhode Island, that was the original plan,” Constance said about where he was leaning to when it came to potential college destination and playing baseball. “But they have 14 commits coming in this year and I don’t want to sit.”

So the 10th-rated 2022 catcher in New England listened to what others had to say. Winthrop, UNC-Asheville, Morehead State, USC-Upstate, Utah Valley and a number of Division III schools headlined by Union College were on the radar.

Then come mid-October, St. Peter’s entered the picture.

“I played a full fall season here and they saw some of my fall games,” Constance explained. “I started talking more and more with their coaches.”

The 13th-rated uncommitted junior in New England at that time liked what head coach Lou Proietti represented.

“Coach Proietti lives and dies baseball,” Constance pointed out. “He said to me on a tour, ‘I don’t get paid like some of the other coaches do but I love the game.’”

There was more.

“He really wanted me,” Constance added. “I talked with others, but no coach really wanted me like he wanted me. I want to play for someone like that.”

But there was, admittedly, some uncertainty in the eyes of the 18-year-old about the university located in Jersey City.

“I went on an official visit in early December and I liked the campus,” Constance related. “I was skeptical about a city school in New Jersey because I like small schools and a tight community but it was comforting to see that it’s a small campus.

“Once I heard my offer it took me about a month to commit,” Constance continued. “I’m excited about it. I know two kids going there from Jersey and they’re good players. It’s good to know we have good kids coming in that want to win.”

The 6-1 180-pounder made an impression on St. Peter’s.

“They liked how fast of a twitch I was,” Constance noted. “They like my size and speed for a catcher. I’m lanky but I run a 6.6 60. They like that my swing is compact, but very advanced.”

In addition to his main position behind the plate, some outfield and even pitching, where he touched 88 off the mound in the fall, are possibilities at the next level for Constance, whose decision to reclassify proved to be important in his recruitment.

“After three years at a public school I reclassified junior year for academics,” explained Constance, who attended Winchendon School before moving to Bridgton Academy this year. “It’s the best decision I ever made in my life. It really sets you up for college. The days are structured, you‘re either working out or doing team stuff. I’d recommend it to anyone struggling in school to go to a prep school or private school.

“I’ve seen my potential the last two years. That’s when all the stress went away and the confidence went up more and more.”

It was a difficult recruiting process according to Constance.

“It was very very stressful,” Constance noted. “I sent out a lot of emails for four years and never got a response from 75 to 80 percent of them. Others said they’d love to see you play in person but for some it was too late (for his class).

“I did a few PBR events and I’m going to play in a collegiate league this summer. I went to the Top Prospect Games twice and I liked how they were run. The games are played differently, it’s not just a game for the pitcher. It was for all the kids to show their skills.”

It helped give exposure to the 87th-ranked 2022 in New England, who is now ready to exhibit what he can do at the next level.

“I’m looking forward to playing against that type of competition,” Constance explained about being part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. “Seeing the spin rate of pitchers and how much faster the game is, I’m looking forward to seeing just how much faster it really is.

“On the school side of things, CEOs from Wall Street come into teach classes. I want to go into business so that will be a big help to me after baseball.”

But Constance is hoping to be part of a baseball program for as long as possible, bringing traits like determination and accountability wherever he plays.

“My dad ran a baseball program for five years,” Constance related. “I was playing baseball at the age of nine against 11 and 12-year-olds. I’ve always loved baseball but thought I’d be a college football player. It was my sophomore year when I realized baseball was in my future. I knew I was better at that and could make it further in the game of baseball. When I stepped on the field it showed. It’s the ‘it’ factor. Once I realized it, I knew.”

Constance, who has a 3.9 GPA over the past year, admits to a great feeling when a commitment with St. Peter’s became official.

“I got a text from the coach and he said he’d give me a call,” Constance reflected. “That’s when he gave me my offer. I walked in the room and told my dad and mom and we all started crying. After that I had a lot of friends come up and hug me. It’s an indescribable feeling. A dream come true.”
