St. Michaels v Brunswick

Frederick, MD: John Harding’s ninth inning sacrifice fly scored Andrew Wanger and proved to be the difference as the Brunswick Railroaders slipped by the St. Michaels Saints 6-5 in nine innings.

The Railroaders will be playing for their second 1A state title in as many years after the thrilling victory and great game to watch.

A quick start for Brunswick (18-7) combined with tentative play by St. Michaels (19-3) led to a 5-0 lead for the Railroaders after two. Brunswick scored two in the first off two hits, a walk, and a pass ball. Then in the second inning Brunswick plated three after three more hits and a misplayed fly ball in the outfield. All this while St. Michaels had just one extra of the minimum step to the plate in that same time. The Brunswick big innings were highlighted by Tyler Ebbert’s three RBI, one in the first and two in the second, both off of singles.

St. Michaels would make a pitching change in the top of the third and the move slowly began to shift the momentum the Saints way. 2017 LHP Nick Brack came in to the game and kept the potent Brunswick hitters at bay for the next 5.1 innings as St. Michaels slowly chipped away the lead off Brunswick ace Wanger.

The Saints scored two in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game up. Tucker Heinlein would highlight the comeback with two big hits during the frames including a big RBI single to pull St. Michaels within one in the bottom of the fourth.

St. Michaels completed their comeback after tying the game in the fifth with a single sandwiched by two HBP’s would load the bases. Trent Saunders drew a two out walk to score the tying run.

Brunswick would begin to retake the momentum after the game tied. Brunswick would threaten in the seventh and eighth innings with multiple runners on base only to see St. Michaels get out of the jam. The Railroaders would finally strike in the top of the ninth inning after getting runners on second and third with no out after a single and sacrifice bunt attempt that reached safely and advanced to second after an infield error. That would set up the late game heroics of Harding.

Brunswick was led by Ebberts, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Connor Kean and Tyler Babyak also collected two hits each. Zach Heffner got the win going two no-hit innings. Wanger went 7 innings givnign up five runs (three earned) giving up seven hits with eight strikeouts and four free passes (two BB, two HBP)

St. Michaels seemed to slow down after putting together their great comeback. In the final three innings the Saints went 1-2-3 in each frame. They were led by Heinlein and Jimmy Halterman with two hits each. Brack went 5.1 innings in relief, giving up three hits and struck out seven while walking five..

Patterson Mill v Pikesville

Frederick, MD: Jake Sheesley struck out 12 Pikesville hitters while only allowing two hits as the Patterson Mill Huskies cruised to a 7-0 victory in game two of the 1A semifinals.

Patterson Mill (21-3) got the scoring started in the bottom half of the second inning after the game was scoreless through an inning and a half. With runners on first and second with one out, Pikesville started a double play on a slow rolling grounder back to the pitcher. Pikesville (10-11) was able to get their first out at second but was unable to finish the double play after an errant throw which led to one run. The Huskies would take advantage of that to the tune of three more runs highlighted by senior shortstop Kyle Goudy’s two-run RBI single to right field which gave Patterson Mill the 4-0 advantage.

The Huskies would add insurance runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to extend their lead to 7-0 which they would not relinquish.

Sheesley kept the Pikesville hitters at bay attacking the strike zone early, then getting the opposing hitters to expand the zone late. Sheesly threw 97 pitches in his seven inning complete game with an impressive 70 going for strikes (72%).

Jacob Michael and Nick Cress each went 2-for-3 for the Huskies and Goudy went 1-for-3 with his two RBI.

Mattew Rozga took the loss for Pikesville. He and Shayan Farasat had the Panthers two hits.
