Amid a myriad of questions and growing concerns regarding the future of the 2020 spring high school baseball season, #2 Gilman traveled to #15 McDonogh for both team's first MIAA "A" Conference regular season games of the year. Coming off a huge win the night before at WCAC powerhouse St. John's (DC), the Greyhounds showed why they are one of the conference favorites this season defeating McDonogh 5-2 behind a strong start from left-handed Davidson commit Danny Rosenfield

McDonogh struck first Thursday afternoon as sophomore Everett Cooper doubled to left field to lead off the game and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Nevin. The University of Alabama commit later scored on a passed ball to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Gilman responded in the top of the second taking a 2-1 lead on a two-RBI double by Matt Wills that scored Matt Leikus and Ryan Martinez

Following the first inning, Rosenfield settled in retiring 12 of the next 14 batters striking out six along the way. The senior lefty showed excellent command of his fastball and breaking ball stifling the McDonogh line-up for a majority of the day. Sac-fly's by Casey Bishop in the fourth and Martinez in the fifth highlighted three insurance runs Gilman put up in the middle innings to make it 5-1 heading to the sixth.

In the sixth, head coach Larry Sheets went to the bullpen calling on senior sidearmer Gabe Gonzales to relieve Rosenfield on the mound. Gonzales ran into a little trouble early as Cooper and Nevin both singled to open the frame but he came up with some big pitches to retire the next three batters in the heart of the order for the Eagles; allowing just one run to come in on a 6-3 fielder's choice off the bat of Kyle Whitaker. Gonzales then retired the side in order in the seventh as the Gilman improved to 1-0 in conference play and 2-0 overall on the young season.

With schools preparing to close their doors, it's anyone's guess as to when the season may continue but in the meantime; head over to our 2020 Maryland High School Headquarters to check out our Preseason Power 25, County/Conference previews, Preseason All-State Teams and much more.
