Season Outlook
Smithsburg has a nice group of key returning player for the 2016 season but will have to find replacements for Justin Smith and Garrett Spinks. Smith hit .532 for the Leopards and also had a 3.08 ERA and tied for the team lead in wins while Spinks hit .377. Both combined for 13 homeruns and 45 RBI. It will be hard to replace the two, but they have a group of players that should   Offensively Smithsburg will be headed up by seniors Bryce Scharenbroch and Ryan Kolich.  Scharenbroch hit .355 for the Leopards and Kolich had a .324 average and tied for the team lead in homeruns (7) and RBI (26).  Senior Joey Schwartz had a solid year hitting .286 for the Leopards. Junior Ryan Bywaters hit .304 with 10 doubles last season and should build off that in 2016. Bywaters has played his way into one of the top prospects in the 2017 in Maryland. Keep an eye on junior Austin Moser behind the plate with a strong arm while hitting from the left side.

On the mound look for seniors Jordan Tapley and Jared Durning to anchor the pitching staff.  Durning went 1-0 with a 4.42 ERA in 25.1 innings last season while Tapley, a Fairmont State recruit, won three games in 20 innings for Smithsburg. Schwartz could contribute more on the mound after 19 innings and three wins last year. Keep an eye on Bywaters, who should also contribute more innings on the mound this upcoming season. The staff will play a large role on the success of the season. Overall the Leopards have a good core on offense if the talent on the mound can have success this season it could translate to a post season run in 2016.
