Southern HS senior Robert “Truman” Thomas recently committed to the University of Maryland.  He was a large factor to Southern’s state championship run in 2014 both on the mound and in the field and looks to help his team repeat in 2015.  He was kind enough to take time out for PBR Maryland and let us all get to know him better.

Media previewWhy did you choose UMD?

--This has always been my dream school ever since I was little. I just fell in love with Maryland and didn't have my eyes set on any other school. The academics are tremendous and the baseball program is one of the best in the nation.

What other schools were you considering?

--Radford and Towson

Now that your commitment is over, what are your goals for your senior year?

--To repeat and win another state championship, and to win county's in a tough Anne Arundel conference

What would you like to get accomplished before you step on campus at Maryland?

--Become a more mentally and physically stronger player. I’m always looking for ways to better myself and finding the ways that are most effective.

What are you looking forward to the most about Appalachian State?

--The competition at the next level and playing baseball for my home state. Also starting a new chapter in my life at a great academic institution, and meeting new people.

Who did you play for over the summer and what was your most memorable experience?

--The Rawling's Prospects, and my most memorable experience was when I started getting noticed by big colleges

Who has been the most influential person over your baseball career and why?

--My dad mostly, I've had numerous influences but my dad has been with me the whole ride to where I am now. He's the one who really pushed me to be the best I can on and off the field

Who is your favorite MLB player and why?

--Brett Cecil, he was my next door neighbor till he went to college. Our families are really close and he was like and older brother to me. And I guess I'm kind of following in his footsteps because he went to Maryland too.

What are you going to bring to Maryland as a freshman?

--A player looking to better himself and the team in any way possible. Every player has a role and whatever mine is I plan to exceed in it.

What is your goal by the end of your freshman year?  By the end of your college career?

--My goal by the end of my freshman year is probably to be a guy the team can count on. Also to be noticed by the coaching staff as a guy who isn't going to waste anyone’s time, I'm there for a purpose and that is to help the team win.

What is your favorite movie?

--My favorite movie is Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee.
