Players of the Week: Carmen Benedetti and Zach Leach

By Mike Penn
Michigan Director of Scouting

With the weather cooperating only some of the time here in Michigan we haven't had many games or performances to choose from.  But with the break in the weather last week and some game action taking place, we finally have some notable performances to highlight.  Every week we will name a Player of the Week based on a player's performance the previous week.  Today marks our first set of Player of the Week awards.

Congratulations to the following players:

Position Player of the Week

Carmen Benedetti, 1B/OF, Grosse Pointe South HS, 2013- Benedetti had a monster week for Grosse Pointe South during their Spring Break trip to Ohio. Benedetti, who has signed with the University of Michigan, ended the week hitting .667 (10-15) with three doubles, a triple and five RBI.  On their trip through the Buckeye State, GPS played extremely tough competition including the defending Division I State Champions Cincinnati Moeller.

So far this week Benedetti has not slowed down as GPS knocked off Brother Rice in yesterday. He picked up another two hits and is 12-18 on the year including a home run. He truly is in mid-season form already.

Pitcher of the Week

Zach Leach, RHP/OF, Richmond HS, 2014- Leach had himself quite the week on the mound for Richmond.  Richmond participated in the Macomb County Spring Break Tournament. The tournament was loaded with good teams.  Leach beat No. 1 seed St. Clair Shores Lake Shore 4-2 in his first start.  In six innings of work he struck out fifteen hitters. On the week Leach struck out 25 hitters in 11 1/3 innings pitched, all of which were against Division I opponents.

Honorable Mention

Nate Wierzgac, C, Detroit Catholic Central HS, 2013- Wierzgac added to his personal highlights by homering off of Matt Ruppenthal (Brother Rice HS, 2014).  Wierzgac's homerun was the difference in the game, giving the Shamrocks a three run lead in the seventh inning as they took down No. 3 rranked Brother Rice.
