August 2, 2012
By Mike Penn
Team Michigan will carry 3 catchers on the Midwest Futures Roster. This particular class of catchers is deeper than usual there are some good prospects in class in general. The three that we have for this weekend are Brent Showers (Rockford HS), Sammy Stevens (Brother Rice HS), and AJ Montoya (St. Joseph's HS).
Brent Showers C/1B, Rockford HS, 2014
Brent is a solid 5-foot-10, 220-pound catcher. As a a freshman he was the starting linebacker for a state champion football team and he also is a state caliber wrestler. He is characterized as a leader and a tough nosed kid. Showers older brother, Shane, is committed to Evansville University, so baseball runs in the bloodlines. Brent has good feet behind the plate and will be solid defensively. Brent will also see time at first base.
Sammy Stevens, C/1B, Brother Rice, 2014
Sammy is a left handed hitting catcher and first baseman. Sammy has a short stroke with some pop and a serviceable arm that will get stronger. He is extremely hard worker and plays at an elite high school program: Brother Rice. Sammy is also an outstanding student.
AJ Montoya, C/UT, St. Joseph's HS, 2014
AJ is an all-around good athlete that plays multiple sports. He possesses good speed, strong arm, and good hands. This past year he was an integral part in helping his team reach the state semifinals. He will see time behind the plate as well as the field. He may even pitch an inning.
