The Minnesota Class of 2015 Identification Showcase  brought almost 45 prospects to be evaluated by PBR Minnesota and showcase themselves to colleges in attendance in the one day event held at Ames Field located on the campus of Dakota County Technical College. Today we unveil our analysis of the top overall prospects at the event..

Our evaluation is comprised of present ability, future projection, and ability to help team's win games at the college level.

TOP overall PROSPECTS

1. Ty Denzer, SS/OF, Chanhassen, 2015
6-foot-1, 180-pound shortstop/outfielder. 6.78 60 time. Switch hitter. Left-handed shows athletic setup. Open stance and pull approach. Compact swing. Short finish with fluidity. Right-handed uses square stance. Balanced swing. Not as much rhythm from this side. Hands tend to drop- slight lift at contact. Stays in middle of field. Exit velocity of 87 mph from left side. 85 mph from right side. Versatile athlete who can play shortstop and outfield. In outfield has good actions. Above average ability. Shoulders stay level on throws allowing arm to work out front with accuracy. 90 mph from outfield. At shortstop fields with confidence. Glove and feet work well. Ability to slow the game down and make routine plays. Will field flat footed at times; able to make up for it with above average arm strength. Very accurate arm. 86 mph across infield. Loose athletic player with current ability and future projection committed to Kansas.

2. Matt Boyde, OF, Minnetonka, 2015
6-foot-2, 180-pound outfielder. 7.18 60 time. Right-handed hitter with easy load. Inline stride. Linear actions. Has good bat speed with leverage from 6-foot-2 frame. Front foot hitter with gap to gap approach. Slight arm bar with long levers into contact. Downhill swing plane with lift through contact. 88 mph exit velocity. In the outfield shows good actions with long athletic body. Shows quality footwork and glove on groundballs. Low ¾ arm slot effects accuracy. 83 mph velocity from outfield. Overall very interesting prospect based on tools, present ability, and projection.

3. Cody Ulfers, SS/OF, Waseca, 2015
6-foot-2, 160-pound shortstop/outfielder. 6.94 60 time. Left-handed hitter. Wide stance. Athletic set-up. Load can be long at times. Slight arm bar. Above average hand eye coordination. Great barrel awareness. Uses entire field. Long finish. Stays on ball long time. 84 mph exit velocity. In the field has athleticism and rhythm. Above average glove. Short arm action with accuracy across infield. 70 mph across infield. Overall is line drive/spray hitter right now with projectable body. Raw tools are average but plays above. Very “hitterish” in games. Always seems to find holes and get on base.

4. Parker Hanson, RHP/1B, Hawley, 2015
6-foot, 170-pound 2 way player. 6.84 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Balanced setup. Starts hands out front to trigger deep load. Flat line drive swing plane. Stays on ball to and through contact. Good gap to gap approach. 78 mph exit velocity. Very athletic for first base. Moves well laterally. Quality glove and able to start double play. 76 mph across infield. On the mound, has rhythm and is balanced. Creates good direction to home. Body is loose and athletic. Short finish out front. Average extension to plate. All pitches show late action from high ¾ slot. Fastball has cut at 82-85 mph. Curveball shows 11/5 break with depth- 70-74 mph. Slider is more of a cutter type pitch. Late flat break at 75-79 mph. Quick twitch athlete who has chance to develop on the mound. Throws 3 pitches for strikes. Fastball has life and maintains arm speed on secondary pitches.

5. Alexander Glick, RHP, Anoka, 2015
6-foot-3, 245-pound right handed pitcher. Big bodied pitcher. Simple delivery. Complicated front leg. Lands open. Minimal extension out front and finishes tall. Over the top slot. Arm works ok. Fastball is 84-87 mph with sink and is heavy for strikes. Shows quality 12/6 breaking ball when he stays back and doesn’t rush at 68-72 mph. Slot fluctuates on changeup effecting command. Overall has arm strength. Showed ability to make adjustments and is capable of throwing 2 pitches for strikes. One of better un-committed 2015’s available.

6. Jackson Buelow, SS/OF, Highland Park, 2015
6-foot-1, 175-pound position player. 6.75 60 time. Right-handed hitter with low hand set. Average rhythm. Disconnect in stride and swing causing slight arm bar. Uphill swing plane with low level finish. Solid contact with 83 mph exit velocity. In the outfield shows athleticism and ability to track balls in air routinely. Throws uphill from ¾ arm slot. Has arm quickness and accuracy when arm slot stays over the top. Outfield velocity of 88 mph. In the infield shows good first step, has athleticism, hands are above average, and arm is very quick with accuracy. Infield velocity of 83 mph. With added strength and some refinements in hitting has chance to make early contributions in college program.

7. Carter Stoehr, 3B, East Ridge, 2015
6-foot-1, 200-pound third baseman. 7.28 60 time. Right-handed hitter with physical build. Average rhythm with slight inverted C load. Leg kick, almost knee to knee, to trigger swing. Good hand eye coordination. Ability to make consistent solid contact. Uses whole field. Slight uphill swing plane with extension. 83 mph exit velocity. Defensively moves well laterally. Glove is very solid. Footwork is good. Arm quickness from over the top slot. Good carry and accuracy on throws. Also pitches; did not throw at this event. Quality 2 way player that has present ability.

8. Justin Lembeck, OF, Prior Lake, 2015
5-foot-10, 165-pound outfielder.7.12 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Medium hand slot with deep load. Inline stride with high leg kick. Balanced and has momentum into contact. Stays on baseball with gap to gap approach. 79 mph exit velocity. In the outfield has good actions. Able to track fly-balls well. Fields ball cleanly and smoothly. Throws uphill at times. Has loose arm with hand speed. Above average accuracy. 84 mph velocity from outfield. Good player.

9. Tyler Johnson, C/RHP, New Prague, 2015
6-foot-4, 190-pound 2 way player. 7.6 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Open stance. Rotational load with shoulders. High leg kick stride and trigger. Lands open and stays open. Pull approach. 78 mph exit velocity. Has flexibility behind the plate. Receives with thumb underneath and high elbow. Gets to ground quickly; needs refinement in blocking mechanics. Tends to fall backwards away from second base effecting exchange and accuracy of throws. Has arm strength. 2.07-2.24 pop times at 77 mph. On the mound, projectable body. Gets to good balance point. Long arm action to start- begins to shorten before release. Over the top slot with good direction to home. Shows downward plane on fastball. Fastball is straight at 79-84 mph. Slider tended to spin with below avg break at 77-78 mph. Usable changeup at 77-79. Overall with an adjustment in arm slot; present velocity on breaking ball; and long body- would be an interesting project on mound. Chance to be a 90 mph arm.

10. Mitchell Kurth, OF/RHP, Hutchinson, 2015
5-foot-10, 175-pound 2 way player. 7.15 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Minimal load. Easy front heel turn and stride trigger. Limited momentum through contact with stiff legs. Line drive swing plane. Consistent solid contact to middle of field. 84 mph exit velocity. Good actions in outfield. Works through balls. Has energy and feet/ glove work well. Throws from high slot with level shoulders. Arm has quickness. Above average throws with accuracy. 86 mph from outfield. Has athletic actions on mound. Average rhythm. Leaks early to plate from balance point. Shoulder tilt. Has enough arm speed to compensate. Quality downhill plane on fastball from over the top slot. Fastball was 78-81 mph. Wraps breaking ball early effecting velocity and depth. 12/6 break with gradual action at 66-69 mph. Changeup was 71-73 with sink and down in zone for strikes. Good 2 way prospect with chance to develop into major contributor.

11. Chad Clute, SS, Chanhassen, 2015
5-foot-10, 180-pound shortstop. 7.35 60 time. Right-handed hitter with balanced athletic set-up in box. Hands in good position, some disconnect in load and stride causing arm bar. Knee to knee trigger allowing good direction towards pitcher. Shows bat speed during BP. Solid gap to gap approach. Drives through contact with slight lift at end. Exit velocity of 80 mph. Defensively shows good first step quickness, very playable hands, and moves well in all directions. Over the top slot with some arm quickness. Arm is loose and accurate with throws. 80 mph across infield. Ability to play 3 spots. Plays above average raw tools.

12. Charlie Black, C, Edina, 2015
6-foot-1, 185-pound catcher. 7.32 60 time. Right-handed hitter with high hand set and minimal load. Balanced stride into contact. Minimal rhythm but clean easy swing. Downhill bat plane creating consistent solid contact. Swing is grooved at times. 70 mph exit velocity. Defensively has athleticism behind the plate. Above average receiving ability. Strong hands. Keeps ball in zone. Has quickness in blocking; needs refinement in mechanics. Quick exchange with solid hands. Inconsistent release effecting accuracy. Keeps ball down allowing infielders to make plays. Overall value in ability to catch and control pitching staff. With refinement and development has tools to make impact. 76 mph velocity with 2.01-2.08 pop times.

13. Robert Eckert, C, Farmington, 2015
5-foot-8, 175-pound catcher. 7.41 60 time. Right-handed hitter with balanced setup. Good rhythm and easy load. Narrow stance with inline stride into contact. Looseness in swing. Balls jumps at times after contact. Quiet head to and through contact. Stays in zone with long finish. 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively shows good receiving skills and hand strength. Quality blocking position with mobility. Compact and clean mechanics on exchange and throws.  Hurries release. Foot quickness is good; needs to improve on footwork mechanics. Consistently open with feet and front side effecting accuracy. 2.07-2.14 pop times with 72 mph arm strength.

14. Kyle Davis, RHP/3B, Hopkins, 2015
6-foot-3, 190-pound 2 way player. 7.81 60 time. Right-handed hitter with hitchy load. Lacks rhythm but has ability to square up baseball. High leg kick trigger. Short to contact. Very simple with upper half. Downhill swing plane with leverage. Has strength. 90 mph exit velocity. Defensively has projectable 3B body, moves well enough laterally, and glove works. Uses lower half in throws. Arm works well from high ¾ slot. 76 mph across. Raw player with ability. Interesting project for 4 year school. On the mound uses a turn and tuck delivery. Hides ball well. Mostly inline and lands open. Arm works smooth and clean with average extension out front. Fastball was 75-78 mph with late cut. Curveball had 11/5 break with late action. Changeup was flat and tended to be up in zone at 73-75 mph. Easy effort.

15. Sam Cobbs, SS, East Ridge, 2015
5-foot-11, 175-pound shortstop. 6.89 60 time. Right-handed hitter with open stance, gets to square before contact. High hands to start- drops hands when initiating swing causing uphill swing plane. Wide base on contact. Limits weight shift through contact. Short finish. Stays in middle of field with solid contact. Exit velocity of 81 mph. In the field shows good first step quickness. Ability to make routine plays. Relies more on arm than feet making plays. Hands are avg.-ok. High ¾ slot with low elbow. 81 mph across infield.

16. Tommy Hutsell, SS, Eastview, 2015
5-foot-11, 185-pound shortstop. 6.85 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Open stance. Gets square and inline. Aggressive load. Wants to hit. Stiff lower half. Level bat plane with barrel awareness. Consistent hard contact with lift at finish. 87 mph exit velocity. Defensively has quickness, glove is usable, plays up to down. Fields ball deep in stance. Stops and re-starts momentum on throws. Accurate throws at 76 mph across infield. Has quick twitch athletic ability. Interested in seeing him in outfield. Offense first type position player with some raw ability.

17. James Fuerniss, 1B, New Prague, 2015
6-foot-3, 220-pound first baseman. 7.34 60 time. Right-handed hitter with physicality. Open stance with ultra-high back elbow. Uphill swing plane and pull approach. Limited weight shift through swing. Shows power during BP. Tweaks to swing and approach could pay huge dividends. Ball comes off bat differently than most players at times. 84 mph exit velocity. At first base has stiff actions fielding. Has ability to make routine plays. Shows some athleticism with feet turning double play. Arm plays enough. 72 mph across infield.

18. Hunter Blommer, OF, St. Cloud Apollo, 2015
5-foot-9, 175-pound outfielder. 7.4 60 time. Right-handed hitter with low hand set. Average easy load. Strides across body cutting swing off and effecting balance through and after contact. Short to contact with flat plane. Has extension through contact. 78 mph exit velocity. Defensively, strong athletic actions in outfield. Good angles and routes to ball with confidence. Arm works very well and some quickness. Above average accuracy to base.

19. Cole Williams, LHP, Minneapolis Southwest, 2015
5-foot-9, 210-pound left handed pitcher. Simple rock and turn delivery. Rushes out of balance point. Hides ball. 2 piece slingy arm action. Fastball and changeup show good life. Late ASR on both pitches. Struggled to repeat with breaking ball. Spins off mound. Everything is down. Throws strikes with 2 pitches. Competes well on mound. Quick arm. Fastball was 78-81 mph. Curveball was 69-71. Change at 74-75.

20. Jack Atkinson, RHP, St. Cloud Apollo, 2015
6-foot-5, 210-pound right handed pitcher. Simple delivery with rhythm. Good balance point with good direction to plate. Lands slightly across body. Arm works well from high ¾ slot. Projectable body. Average extension to home- tends to cut follow through short and stays tall on release. Fastball was 77-82 mph with slight sinking action for strikes. Curveball showed 11/5 late break at 70-71 mph. Ability to keep pitch middle-away to right-handed hitters. Cutter had firm late action at 75-77 mph. Inconsistent with pitch but has possibilities. Also threw a change-up at 71-72 mph. Tended to leave pitch arm side, up in zone, with flat action.

21. Benjamin Johnson, 2B/RHP, Elk River, 2015
5-foot-10, 165-pound 2 way player. 7.21 60 time. Right-handed hitter with open stance. Strides to square and stays inline. Deep load into swing. Hands drop in swing creating uphill swing plane. Transfers weight well into contact. Short finish. 83 mph exit velocity. Defensively fields the ball up to down. Moves well laterally. Tends to field balls deep and flat footed. Throws from ¾ arm slot across infield. 75 mph arm strength. On the mound uses simple delivery. Good balance point and direction to home. Effort in release from high ¾ arm slot. Short compact arm stroke. Fastball showed heavy sinking action for strikes at 79-82 mph. Curveball had 11/5 break; tended to leave arm side with gradual action. 68-70 mph. Did not throw changeup.

22. Carter Schmidt, C/OF, Chaska, 2015
6-foot-1, 180-pound catcher/outfielder. 7.12 60 time. Right-handed hitter. High hands. Gradual load. Length to swing. Slight arm bar. Flat swing plane with average balance. Stays in middle of field. 82 mph exit velocity. Ok actions in outfield. Ability to make routine plays. High ¾ slot with average carry. 82 mph from outfield. Solid receiver and blocker. Average feet to second base. Slightly open front side. Limited momentum and direction on throws. Gets to proper throwing slot. 2.14-2.28 pop times with 72 mph arm strength.

23. Gunner McClellan, 2B, Cretin Derham Hall, 2015
5-foot-10, 170-pound second baseman. 7.82 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Slight shoulder load with high back elbow. Swings underneath and uphill. Easy stride and balanced swing. 81 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet defensively. Soft hands and ability to make routine plays. Accurate throws from multiple arm angles. Good lateral movement. 73 mph across infield. Fields ball easy- quality above average second baseman.

24. Joshua Rehwaldt, 1B, Apple Valley, 2015
6-foot-6, 215-pound first baseman. 7.39 60 time. Left-handed hitter. Medium pre-set load. Slight leg kick to trigger swing. Narrow base. Uphill swing plane with flashes of power. Has backwards momentum with lift through contact. Fast hands with all pull approach. 87 mph exit velocity. At first base shows average actions and feet. Ability to make routine plays. Good target and moves well around bag receiving throws. 77 mph across infield.

Joe Amble, SS, Cretin Derham Hall, 2015
6-foot-2, 165-pound shortstop. 7.84 60 time. Right-handed hitter, inverted C load into a high back elbow slot. Inline stride with balance and flat swing plane. Shows good hand-eye coordination, keeps knob inside ball, and good weight transfer through contact. Lacks strength to drive baseball but makes solid contact. 76 mph exit velocity. Defensively shows proper footwork, works down to up, and has soft hands. Short over the top arm action with ability to use different arm angles with accuracy. 65 mph across infield.

Brennan Beese, C/LHP, Elk River, 2015
5-foot-11, 185-pound 2 way player. 7.53 60 time. Right-handed hitter. High hand set with minimal load. Slightly open stance with short stride into contact. Minimal weight shift in narrow base. Unbalanced swing. Downhill swing plane with ability to get on top of baseballs. 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively has good flexibility behind the plate. Is an aggressive receiver with ability to keep balls in the zone. Average blocking ability with below average quickness. Showed above average accuracy to second. Exchange and arm slot were inconsistent. 67 mph velocity with 2.15-2.21 pop times. On the mound uses two piece arm action from high ¾ slot. Tends to travel across rubber effecting balance point. Leaks open early with stiff front side. Stays tall on release with little extension to home. Fastball was straight at 74-76 mph. Curveball was 65-68 mph with early gradual 10/4 rotation and break. Changeup had cutting action 64-67 mph.

John Bird, RHP/SS, Cretin Derham Hall, 2015
5-foot-11, 165-pound 2 way player. 7.28 60 time. Right-handed hitter with simple load and inline stride. Flat swing plane with ok extension through contact. Very simple efficient swing. 85 mph exit velocity. Defensively uses choppy steps to field. Hands are usable and makes routine plays with glove. Low ¾ arm slot effects accuracy across infield. Average rhythm while fielding. 74 mph across infield. On the mound uses big rocker step into balance point. Inconsistent balance with crossfire delivery from low ¾ slot. Lands hard across body. Arm works ok. Tends to leave hand underneath baseball on all pitches. Slight cutting action on 75-76 mph fastball. Tends to be underneath breaking ball; creating spinning flat action on pitch at 62-63 mph. Changeup had near FB arm speed with sinking action- best secondary pitch.

Garrett Gillen, SS, Blaine, 2015
6-foot, 175-pound shortstop. 7.54 60 time. Left-handed hitter with narrow stance. Swings from back side with uphill plane. Limited weight shift through contact. Pull approach. 74 mph exit velocity. Defensively shows average actions, makes routine plays. Limited by foot speed. Feet are heavy. Arm works from over the top slot. Accurate throws across diamond at 73 mph.

Cole Gueningsman, C, Annandale, 2015
5-foot-11, 165-pound catcher. 7.26 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Lays bat flat in load. Front heel turn trigger to swing. All pull approach. Lacks strength. Uphill swing plane. 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively is upright while receiving limiting mobility. Proper blocking mechanics. Simple body turn and exchange throwing mechanics. 2.31-2.51 pop times with throwing velocity of 71 mph.

Kyle Hastings, SS, Centennial, 2015
5-foot-11, 160-pound shortstop. 7.27 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Balanced square stance. Short stride. Active circular load trigger. Uphill swing plane. Middle of field approach. Flyball hitter. 74 mph exit velocity. In the field works to get into proper fielding position, short strides to ball, tends to throw flat footed across infield. Average rhythm and actions. 64 mph across infield.

Joshua Hewett, 2B/RHP, Shakopee, 2015
6-foot, 165-pound 2 way player. 7.34 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Stiff load. Balanced base with good direction. Rotational upper body with flat swing plane. Limited weight shift and momentum into contact. 71 mph exit velocity. Defensively moves with short steps. Tends to play up to down fielding the ball. Limited front side and lower half on throws. ¾ arm slot. 69 mph across infield. On the mound, simple delivery. Has good balance point and direction to home. 2 piece arm action. Repeats well. Throws strikes with 3 pitches. Fastball was 70-74 mph. Curveball 61-64 mph. Changeup 64-68 with ok ASR.

Ben Kleist, LHP/1B, Mankato, 2015
6-foot, 195-pound 2 way player. 9.1 60 time. Left-handed hitter. High hand set with minimal load. Starts and finishes square. Simple pick up and put down stride. Stiff legs. Uphill swing plane. 72 mph exit velocity. At first base works ground up and has soft hands. Able to make routine plays. 69 mph velocity across infield. On the mound uses simple rocker step and gets to good balance point. 2 piece arm action, stabs in back, and throws from low ¾ arm slot. Turns everything over on release. Fastball was 58-62 mph. Slider was 51-52 and changeup was 51-52.

Jacob Kraft, LHP, Hutchinson, 2015
6-foot-1, 175-pound left handed pitcher. Slow deliberate motion. Inconsistent balance point. Will collapse with lower half. Head jerk with effort from over the top arm slot. Lands open. Tends to leave balls arm side. Would benefit from lower arm slot. Arm does work clean. Fastball had sink away from right-handed hitters at 72-76 mph. Threw 12/6 breaking ball for strikes at 61-64. Changeup was down in zone consistently for strikes at 63-66 mph.

Nicholas Medo, 2B, Owatonna, 2015
6-foot, 170-pound second baseman. 6.97 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Low hand set with minimal load. Square stance. Simple front heel turn trigger. Short uphill swing plane with short finish. 80 mph exit velocity. Plays on the balls of his feet, moves well to ball, at times plays tall in position. Short arm action with arm speed. Makes accurate throws. Average on body control plays. Slightly stiff upper body in actions. 79 mph across infield.

Bradley Peterson, OF, Park, 2015
6-foot-1, 170-pound outfielder. 7.22 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Easy load with short stride. Short to contact. Good hands to ball. Has some snap at and through contact. Rotational lower half. 81 mph exit velocity. In the outfield has average actions and makes routine plays. Throws flat footed with little momentum from ¾ arm slot. 78 mph velocity from outfield.

Daniel Pharis, C/OF, Chanhassen, 2015
5-foot-11, 185-pound catcher/outfielder. 7.49 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Easy load with inline stride. Line drive swing plane. Front foot hitter. Quiet head and short to contact. Minimal finish. 88 mph exit velocity. In the outfield shows average actions. Fields balls cleanly. Stiff over the top throwing action. 73 mph outfield velocity. Behind the dish shows good lower half flexibility. Strong hands and ability to receive. Above average blocking mechanics with deadens balls well. Stiff upper half while throwing with limited velocity and carry on throws. 2.26-2.51 pop times at 69 mph.

Henry Poling, C/OF, Minneapolis Washburn, 2015
5-foot-10, 155-pound catcher/infielder. 7.75 60 time. Left-handed hitter. Pre-set hand position. Small leg kick trigger. Starts and stays in-line. Minimal rhythm. Wide base. Good weight transfer. Pull approach with slashy level swing plane. 79 mph exit velocity. Average actions in outfield. Uses lower half in throws. Limited front side and mid ¾ arm slot. Below avg. carry. 76 mph from OF. Easy receiving and blocking actions behind plate. Narrow stance limits mobility. Good blocking mechanics. Below average footwork on throws. Open front side. ¾ arm slot. Quick exchange and release. 2.03-2.13 pop times. Arm strength of 67 mph.

Tyler Safgren, C, Eden Prairie, 2015
6-foot, 190-pound catcher. 7.53 60 time. Right-handed hitter. Short load. Stays compact and short to contact. Balanced swing. Limited rhythm. Stiff. Line drive swing plane. Middle of the field approach. 66 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows proper receiving and blocking mechanics. Flexible lower half and solid glove. Throwing wise, low exchange to glove and open feet effected accuracy. 72 mph with pop times of 2.2-2.32.

Dominic Schleif, OF/LHP, Shakopee, 2015
5-foot-11, 165-pound 2 way player. 7.69 60 time. Left-handed hitter. Low hand position. Deep load and long inline stride to contact. Good weight shift through contact. Best when on/ on top of baseball and swing stays level. Middle of the field approach. 80 mph exit velocity. In the outfield shows ok actions and works to get behind fly-balls. Field balls off the ground cleanly. ¾ arm slot with below avg. carry. 78 mph from outfield. On the mound uses simple step and turn delivery. Good balance point. Low hand set. Stabs down with 2 piece arm action. Short over the top slot. Fastball cuts and sinks varying with release and hand placement. Curveball showed 2/8 shape with late break. Changeup had flat toppling action. Fastball was 73-76 mph. Curveball 66-68 mph. Changeup was 64-68.

Joseph Sullivan, OF/1B, Academy of Holy Angels, 2015
