East Central College Scout Day: Takeaways & Stat Leaders

By: Diego Solares
Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri

On Friday, September 1st, the PBR Missouri staff traveled to the campus of Maryville University to house the St. Louis Area JUCO Scout Day, which featured four junior college programs from the area - East Central College, St. Charles CC, St. Louis CC, and Jefferson College. These four schools participated in a pro-style workout in front of our staff, collecting unrivaled data with the help of our tech partners as well as edited video footage.

Today we’ll turn our attention to East Central College, as 13 members from the Falcons’ took part in the event. For a full roster of those in attendance, click HERE. To see all of the stats from the East Central workout, click HERE.

Below you’ll learn more about the Falcons’ workout, including a few names that stood out to our scouting staff and stat leaders from the day.

TAKEAWAYS

+ CIF DeVon Jennings (Francis Howell North, 2022) is a top returning offensive threat for the Falcons, listed at a highly physical 6-foot, 215-pounds, and coming off a freshman campaign where he slashed .286/.364/.467 with five home runs in 105 at-bats. Jennings took the loudest round of BP at this event, showing easy power to the pull-side with noticeable bat speed to pair. He launched his furthest ball an event high 385 feet, per TrackMan and four of his 10 batted balls traveled 335-plus feet, too. Coupled with his ability to drive the ball deep into the left-center gap, five of Jennings’ batted balls jumped off his barrel at 98+ mph, including a 103.8 mph peak.

+ MIF Jackson Kirn (Eureka, 2022) paced the Falcons in a few statistical categories throughout Friday’s workout. The 6-foot, 170-pound Kirn ran the event’s fastest 60-yard dash (6.89) and he led the event in peak infield velocity (87 mph) as well. Kirn’s hardest hit ball came off his barrel at 97.4 mph while sending his furthest ball 340 feet, per TrackMan.

+ A pair of backstops for East Central showed well at this event: C Landen Roberts (Saint Clair, 2021) and C Owen Smith (Lindbergh, 2022). Roberts worked almost exclusively to the middle-away side of the field in BP from a short and connected right-handed swing. He averaged 88.7 mph per batted ball, peaking at 95.1 mph, and was on the barrel regularly throughout his round (71%). Roberts was also up to 76 mph from the crouch and popped a 2.05 on his quickest bullet. Smith’s 99.6 mph max exit velocity was the second highest mark of the event and he showed well defensively too, working around the bag from the chute in the 2.07-to-2.14 range.

+ Transferring in from Iowa Western, CIF Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, 2022) stands at a physical 6-foot-2, 215-pounds and will look to make an impact in his first season with the Falcons. Hooper showed barrel feel and strength to the middle of the field, squaring up a handful of 95+ mph line drives to center field throughout his round, while his furthest ball traveled 353 feet, too.

+ CIF Denver Eaves (Parkway West, 2022) and INF Joey Reichmuth (Rockwood Summit, 2022) are two more sophomore bats worth a mention from this event. Eaves flashed bat strength from the right side, swatting the second farthest batted ball (366 feet) on the day while squaring his hardest ball up at 94.3 mph. The left-handed hitting Reichmuth finished third in peak batted distance (353 feet) and reached a peak exit velocity of 93 mph in BP.

+ RHP Billy Underwood (Helias Catholic, 2022) returns a bulk of innings to the Falcons’ pitching staff, hurling 37 ⅔ frames last spring. At 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, Underwood’s fastball played in the low-to-mid-80s in this ‘pen, touching 85.8 mph, and he spun a 68-71 mph curveball with some depth off it as well.

+ RHP Hayden Steelman (Southern Boone, 2022) and RHP Adam DeBoer (Beatrice, 2022; Nebraska) are two more right-handed arms to know on this staff. Steelman, who logged 28 ⅓ innings on the mound last spring, pitched at 83-85 mph with his fastball in his ‘pen, while flashing feel to spin a curveball (69-71 mph) and slider (72-75 mph). DeBoer’s heater played at 83-85 mph as well, complimenting it with a 72-73 mph curveball and straight changeup at 76-78 mph.

+ RHP Zachary Stenger (Northwest Cedar Hill, 2022) showed above-average feel to spin a breaking ball in this look. Stenger’s 72-74 mph curveball averaged 2630 RPM, peaking at 2798 RPM, with sharp action and tilt at times. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound sophomore’s fastball played in the low-80s, touching 84 mph.
