St. Charles CC Scout Day: Takeaways & Stat Leaders

By: Diego Solares
Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri

On Friday, September 1st, the PBR Missouri staff traveled to the campus of Maryville University to house the St. Louis Area JUCO Scout Day, which featured four junior college programs from the area - East Central College, St. Charles CC, St. Louis CC, and Jefferson College. These four schools participated in a pro-style workout in front of our staff, collecting unrivaled data with the help of our tech partners as well as edited video footage.

Today we’ll turn our attention to St. Charles CC, as 24 members from the Cougars’ program took part in the event. For a full roster of those in attendance, click HERE. To see all of the stats from the St. Charles workout, click HERE.

Below you’ll learn more about the Falcons’ workout, including a few names that stood out to our scouting staff and stat leaders from the day.

TAKEAWAYS

+ Perhaps the biggest winner from this event was C/OF Grant Huebner (Edwardsville, 2022; IL), who showed well in all facets and will be a high-end name-to-know heading into this fall circuit. The 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore started his day off by running a 6.83 60-yard dash and followed that up by showing double-plus arm strength from the outfield (97 mph) as well as an advanced arm behind the dish (84 mph) with carry and accuracy to the bag. Though he saw plenty of time in center field last spring for the Cougars, Huebner has the arm strength, receiving skills, and leadership qualities to be an asset behind the plate at the next level. Offensively, Huebner flashed above-average pull-side raw power too, backspinning baseballs from an easy, balanced right-handed swing into the left-center gap. His three deepest barrels all traveled 350+ feet with a 359 foot peak distance and 100 mph max exit velocity. On top of that, Huebner launched a no-doubt home run over the left-center wall during the live BP session of this event. As a freshman last season, Huebner slashed .288/.419/.495 over 184 at-bats with eight home runs, 12 doubles, 33 RBIs, and he stole 39 bases, too. A huge piece in Edwardsville winning the IHSA state championship in 2022, Huebner’s highly competitive reputation has followed him to the collegiate level, where he’ll look to lead the Cougars to another 30+ win season.

+ 1B Kyle Mager (Webster Groves, 2022) stands at a hulking 6-foot-3, 245-pounds, swinging a highly physical right-handed barrel as a result. Mager put on a show during batting practice, working gap-to-gap without much effort and putting his inherent raw strength on full display. Nine of his batted balls registered at over 100 mph with his hardest being a 107 mph missile that comfortably cleared the left field wall and traveled 404 feet, per TrackMan. 13 of Mager’s batted balls traveled over 320 feet, with 10 of those breaching the 350 foot mark, and six of those went further than 375 feet. We caught a brief glimpse of Mager’s bat strength translating in a gameplay setting, as he screamed an 88.6 mph fastball directly over the center field wall on a line for a home run during the live BP session.

+ OF Josh Syfert (Marquette, 2022) is a high-end athlete that put up noticeable numbers in multiple different stat categories at this event. At 6-foot-2, 185-pounds, Syfert showed athleticism and bat speed in BP, working middle-in throughout with power deep into the left-center gap. He drove five balls over 340 feet, sending his furthest ball over the left-center wall at an estimated 385 feet, per TrackMan. Syfert had 11 batted balls jump off his barrel at 95+ mph with three of them eclipsing the 100 mph mark, including a 101.8 mph max. Though he did not run at this event, we’ve long known Syfert to be a burner - he ran a 6.55 back in 2021 and we’ve heard that number has only lowered over the last two years.

+ Transferring into St. Charles, OF Darian Crisp (DeSmet, 2022) saw success at the plate in a brief role for the Division II champion Heartland Hawks last spring, slashing .333/.459/.614 over 57 at-bats. Crisp doesn’t lack strength on a 6-foot, 200-pounds, and the left/left sophomore showed high-end athleticism with pull-side power to pair throughout his workout. Crisp kicked his day off by running a 6.65 60, the second-highest mark of this event, and followed that up by consistently elevating deep backspun contact into the right-center gap. Six of his batted balls traveled more than 320 feet, with four of them breaking the 345 foot mark and his furthest going 365 feet, per TrackMan. From the outfield, Crisp was up to 87 mph on his hardest bullet with quick, active feet.

+ INF Ethan Edinger (Troy Buchanan, 2022) transfers to the Cougars from Kirkwood CC and is another name on this roster with an opportunity to provide positive production this upcoming season. Built at a physical 6-foot, 184-pounds with strength throughout, Edinger has bat speed, bat strength, and controlled aggression from the right side while flashing pull-side power throughout his round. He worked almost exclusively into the left-center gap, with six 99+ mph batted balls that way, including a 101.4 mph max, as well as a 100.5 mph rocket. He launched his furthest barrel 378 feet to left field with five total batted balls breaching the 350 foot mark. Edinger defends with confidence, playing with pre-pitch bounce and fluidity on the move, particularly to his forehand. He showed carry across the diamond too, topping at 88 mph from a loose high ¾ arm that worked from a lower arm angle when needed.

+ C Tamden Webb-Tate (Ankeny, 2022; IA) is a highly physical 6-foot-3, 220-pound returner for the Cougars. Last season, over 143 at-bats, Webb-Tate batted .287 with a .430 on-base percentage, 28 RBIs, and he stole 20 bags, too. He showed noticeable raw power in this look on Friday, squaring his hardest ball up at 104 mph with five 100+ mph barrels and 12 total at 98+ mph. Webb-Tate elevated nine balls at 340+ feet, with four of those traveling 365+ feet, including a 380 ft. max. His strength translated to the field, where he was 80 mph from the crouch, while popping at 1.98-to-2.07, and 88 mph across the infield from first base.

+ INF Dillon Smail (Hillsboro, 2022; IL) packs plenty of strength into a physical, muscled-up 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame. A 6.69 runner, Smail showed no shortage of bat strength in BP, barreling balls up at a 94.2 mph average with a 102.8 mph peak. 10 of his batted balls came off his right-handed barrel at 97 mph or higher, including three at 100+ mph. Eight traveled upwards of 320 feet, including four at 360+ feet, with a peak of 379 feet, per TrackMan. On the infield, Smail’s feet work in rhythm around the baseball and his hands play out front with an 85 mph arm at peak across the diamond.

+ OF Connor Earlywine (Jefferson City, 2022) can really run, darting his way to an event-best 6.57 60-yard dash, and running a 6.53 at an event last year, too. A left-handed hitter, Earleywine sprayed line drives to all fields throughout his round from a short and simple swing that effectively covered the plate.

+ Two more bats to know from this workout are OF Luke Erickson (Eau Claire Memorial, 2022; WI) and INF Nick Beech (Lee’s Summit, 2022). Erickson is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound athlete with an uphill left-handed stroke that looked to elevate the baseball throughout his round of BP. He recorded the third-highest average batted distance of this event (298 ft), sending his furthest ball 362 feet with a 98.7 mph max exit velocity. Beech boasts an ultra-physical 6-foot, 195-pound stature with inherent strength to pair, posting a 92.6 mph average exit velocity with a 98.9 mph max. He’s also a 6.83 runner and was 85 mph across the infield in his workout.

+ RHP Tyler Timmerman (Liberty, 2022) returns 51 ⅓ innings and 62 strikeouts from last spring to this Cougars’ squad. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound long, lanky sophomore has upside stuff, starting with an upper-80s fastball that flashed carry at peak (17.9 IVB) with 100% spin efficiency as well. Off that, Timmerman showed heavy horizontal action (17.4 HM avg) on a 74-76 mph slider that figures to be an effective offering against right-handed hitters. Timmerman figures to be another key arm for the Cougars in his sophomore year.

+ New to the Cougars is RHP Tanner Mueller (Lutheran St. Charles, 2021), and the 6-foot-5, 205-pound St. Louis’ native pairs is hulking stature with loud stuff on the bump. Mueller’s fastball sat in the low-90s, touching 94.6 mph, with carry in the zone both on average (16.1”) and peak (20.5”) from a high release point (6.6 ft.) on average. His primary secondary pitch in this look was a low-to-mid-80s slider that he threw with fastball intent and aggression, working mostly towards the glove-side of the plate. Though still fully harnessing his potent stuff, Mueller’s arm talent is undeniable and he should certainly draw attention this fall.

+ RHP Nick Bassi (Cathedral, 2022; IN) toes the rubber at a physically proportionate 6-foot-3, 215-pounds, and is another arm with power stuff on this staff. Bassi’s fastball may be his most interesting offering, as it plays in the upper-80s, touching 90.3 mph in this ‘pen, with true four-seam backspin (19.7” IVB avg.) from a high release point on average. He pairs that with a 76-80 mph slider and 74-75 mph curveball that each flash above-average action when thrown with fastball intent.

+ A clean, controlled mover downhill, RHP Andrew Sharpe (Parkway Central, 2022) is another sophomore arm to follow on this Cougars’ staff. The 6-foot, 185-pound Sharpe pumped his fastball in the upper-80s, touching 90 mph twice, and working around the zone at times. Though he didn’t land his breaking ball for strikes consistently in this look, Sharpe’s 73-76 mph curveball did flash sharp action at times and has the potential to be an above-average offering should he spot it around the zone more often. He rounded out his arsenal with a firm cutter at 84-86 mph.

+ Another returning arm for the Cougars is RHP Cameron Marchi (Jackson, 2022), who tossed 30 ⅔ innings last spring and punched out 38 over that span. At 6-foot-3, 215-pounds, Marchi’s fastball played around the zone at 85-86 mph with straight four-seam action. He spun a firm 78-79 mph slider at 2400+ RPM on average to the glove-side corner of the plate with tight, bullet-like spin. Marchi also showed a straight changeup at 80-81 mph that he threw from a slightly lower release angle, on average, than his fastball.

+ LHP Jude Tenny (Lafayette, 2022) is a pitchability southpaw that filled up the zone with three pitches during his ‘pen as well as in the live BP session of this event. A quick worker with rhythm, Tenny’s fastball played in the low-to-mid-80s, touching 85.9 mph, with carry at times (T20.7” IVB) from a short, continuous high ¾ slot. Tenny’s confident in his slider, spinning it at 73-75 mph for strikes consistently with depth and late break at times. He also showed advanced feel for a 78-79 mph changeup, throwing it at fastball arm speed and slot with natural fading action while killing both spin and lift.

+ RHP Jameson Strozier (Lebanon, 2022; IL) is a 6-foot-3, 250-pound sophomore with an aptitude to spin the baseball. Strozier’s fastball sat at 87-88 mph, touching 89 mph once, and he spun a 76-78 mph breaking ball off it with sharp, power spin at 2500+ RPM on average.

Two freshman arms that’ll look to contribute in their first year with the Cougars are RHP Carson Clark (Fort Zumwalt West, 2023) and RHP Jackson McDonald (Putnam County, 2023; IL):

+ Clark, who’s a 6-foot-3, 200-pound athlete with room to add more strength still, works from a lower ¾ arm angle, creating natural arm-side run on an 87-91 mph fastball. His primary offering is a true sweeping slider (T20” HM) thrown from a slightly lower arm angle than his fastball at 73-75 mph.

+ McDonald stands out when he takes the mound, toeing the rubber at a highly physical and mature 6-foot-4, 200-pounds. He pumped his fastball at 87-89 mph with power sink (T18.1” HM) at times, spinning a 74-76 mph slider while also showing a 76-77 mph changeup in this look.
