St. Louis CC Scout Day: Takeaways & Stat Leaders
September 5, 2023
On Friday, September 1st, the PBR Missouri staff traveled to the campus of Maryville University to house the St. Louis Area JUCO Scout Day, which featured four junior college programs from the area - East Central College, St. Charles CC, St. Louis CC, and Jefferson College. These four schools participated in a pro-style workout in front of our staff, collecting unrivaled data with the help of our tech partners as well as edited video footage.
Today we’ll turn our attention to St. Louis CC, as 22 members from the Archers’ program took part in the event. For a full roster of those in attendance, click HERE. To see all of the stats from the East Central workout, click HERE.
Below you’ll learn more about the Archers’ workout, including a few names that stood out to our scouting staff and stat leaders from the day.
TAKEAWAYS
+ INF Dylan Block (Harrison, 2022; AR) returns to the Archers after a successful freshman campaign, where he slashed .345/.422/.593 over 145 at-bats, and figures to be an integral piece of this offense in 2024. Block showed feel to spray line drives to all fields throughout his round of BP, though he favored the pull-side, where he was regularly on the barrel from a short, rhythmic right-handed swing. He averaged 91.6 mph per batted ball, the highest of this event, and peaked at 99.9 mph, swatting his furthest ball 373 feet as well, per TrackMan. On the infield, Block played low to the ground with footwork feel up the middle.

+ INF Jayden Jones (Francis Howell Central, 2022) is another key returner from last year’s team that paced the Archers in power production, slashing .335/.452/.559 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs as a freshman. Jones holds strength throughout his 5-foot-11, 210-pound and generates easy bat speed (T85.5 mph) from the right side, impacting the baseball with authority as a result. Four of his batted balls traveled over 330 feet, with a 365 ft. blast down the left field line and a 384 ft. rocket into the left-center gap being his two furthest swings. Jones squared balls up at an average of 91 mph throughout his round with a 98.3 mph high, staying on the barrel consistently (80%) as well.

+ 1B Owen Constantineau (Colonel By, 2022; CA) steps into the left-handed batter’s box at a physical 6-foot-1, 230-pounds with power to match his stature. Working almost exclusively to the pull-side, Constantineau juiced the hardest ball of this entire event (100.7 mph) and also finished near the top of the event’s average exit velocity (91 mph) leaderboard. Five of his batted balls came off his barrel at 96+ mph with his furthest traveling 347 feet to right-center.

+ C Ian Funk (Eureka, 2022) showed well defensively behind the plate at this event, leading the way in peak throwing velocity (T77 mph) and pop times (1.84-1.91). Funk is quick at gather with a short trigger release and an accurate arm to boot, working around the bag on all five of his throws out of the crouch. A switch-hitter, Funk peppered line drives to the middle of the field from a compact, direct swing.

+ INF Cooper Howell (DeSmet, 2022) is an intriguing name to follow for the Archers heading into his sophomore year. Howell looks the part in a uniform with proportionate strength throughout a 5-foot-10, 180-pound frame. He flashed both bat speed and bat strength at the plate from a long, level, and intentful right-handed swing. Howell’s deepest ball traveled 360 feet, with a 344 ft. pull-side home run and a 351 ft. barrel mixed in, too. A confident defender on the dirt, Howell’s 90 mph high across the infield was the highest mark of this event.

+ OF Zane Roos (Lindbergh, 2022) has loud tools to pair with a physically imposing 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame. At that size, Roos ran the second fastest 60-yard dash (6.71) of the event and comfortably paced his pears in peak throwing velocity from the outfield, topping at 95 mph on his hardest bullet. Offensively, Roos stayed on the barrel throughout his BP round with a 90.6 mph average exit velocity, 94.5 mph peak, and 342 foot max batted distance.

+ OF Logan Stipes (Francis Howell, 2022) took one of the day’s better BP rounds and figures to be a follow bat on this Archers’ squad. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound sophomore is athletic at the plate with balance throughout, showing hand speed and barrel feel to the pull-side. All but one of his batted balls came off at 90+ mph with natural backspin, including a 97.3 mph high, and his furthest batted ball traveled 353 feet down the left field line.
+ OF Garrison Scott (East Prairie, 2022) ran the fastest 60 at this event, cruising to a 6.58 time from a long, lean 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame. Scott was up to 86 mph from the outfield, hit his hardest ball 94.4 mph, and his furthest barrel traveled 340 feet, too.
+ INF/RHP Matthew Brown (Oakville, 2022) showed well on both sides of the ball at this event. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound sophomore kicked his day off by running a 6.86 60, the third fastest time of this group, and he finished second on our infield throwing velocity leaderboard (T87 mph), too. Offensively, Brown works uphill to the baseball from a rotational left-handed swing that flashed bat strength, leaving the yard to right field on his furthest batted ball (345 feet) in BP. He hopped on the mound afterwards, pitching at 84-86 mph with his fastball, spinning a 71-73 mph curveball at 2600+ RPM for strikes, and effectively killing spin (T1444 RPM) on a 75-77 mph changeup.
+ RHP Connor Jackson (Freeburg, 2022; IL) stands at a proportionally strong 6-foot-2, 190-pounds with an intriguing three-pitch mix to pair. Jackson’s fastball touched 87 mph, pitching at 84-86 mph from a lower release height on average (4.7 ft.) while spinning at 2400+ RPM. His slider flashed noticeable lateral action, 15.8 inches of horizontal movement, at 71-74 mph, and it averaged 2451 RPM, too. Jackson rounded out his arsenal with a 74-75 mph changeup with minimal spin (T1492 RPM) and lift (T4.8” IVB), while averaging 14.8” of horizontal movement out of a similar arm angle to his fastball.

A pair of freshman arms to know for the Archers: RHP Logan Slinkard (Lutheran South, 2023) and RHP Dillon Slinkard (Lutheran South, 2023):
+ Logan, who stands at a lean, lanky 6-foot-5, 195-pounds, led the event in peak fastball velocity (T88.1 mph), pitching at 86-88 mph throughout his ‘pen. He landed all five of the curveballs he threw for strikes at 73-75 mph with depth and gradual break off an 11/5 plane, and also showed a low-spin changeup (T1509 RPM) at 75-76 mph.
+ Dillon worked in the zone with three pitches too, pitching in the low-80s with his fastball, while touching 85 mph. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound freshman also showed a 71-72 mph curveball and 75-77 mph changeup (T1447 RPM).
+ Coming off a strong season on the mound for the 6A state runner-up Vikings, RHP Evan Piwowarski (Francis Howell, 2023) is another new name that’ll look to bolster this Archers’ pitching staff. We’ve long known the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Piwowarski to be a strike-thrower and he showed those same skills in this look, working in the zone consistently with an 83-85 mph fastball. He spun a more gradual curveball at 70-72 mph while also showing a tighter, more firm 73-74 mph slider, and rounding his arsenal out with a 76-78 mph changeup that flashed arm-side action.
