Prep Baseball Report Nebraska's Central Nebraska Prospect ID took place on SaturdayAugust 13, 2016. The event was held at the University of Nebraska -Kearney’s, Memorial Field, in Kearney, NE. The event feature prospects from the 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 from Nebraska. Thank you to the players, parents, staff and Nebraska-Kearney Head Coach Damon Day for such a great event. Memorial Field offers some of the finest facilities in the Midwest.

After breaking down the video, statics and having multiple conversations around the top performances in the event we have complied a list of the Top 10 prospects who attended the Central Nebraska Prospect ID.


1. Jared Wegner, OF/RHP, 2018
6-foot, 180-pound two-way player who showed some of the top overall tools at the Central Nebraska Prospect ID. Athletic build with wide shoulders, Wegner ran a 7.03 60 yard sprint. At the plate, square stance with high leg kick, uphill swing path. Hard contact to all fields, showed power potential to pull side. In the infield, projects as a corner infielder. Has active feet and hands, works through the ball, threw accurately to first topping out at 81 mph. On the mound, topped out at 84 mph with his fastball. Mechanically, repeats his delivery well. Front leg leaks opens at times. Long finish out front. 62-65 mph breaking ball 11/5 spin and has potential to be an out pitch when released out front. Heavy 74-75 mph changeup with running action. 

2. Christopher Palomo, 3B/RHP, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound two-way player ran a 7.53 60 yard sprint. Put together one of the top overall performances at the Central Nebraska Prospect Showcase. At the plate, had consistent hard gap to gap contact during his round of BP. Square crouched stance, small stride triggers hands and weight shift through the baseball. Slightly uphill swing plane with good barrel control through the zone. In the field, has active feet and soft hands. Works through the ball and threw accurately across the infield at 73 mph.  On the mound, has repeatable simple mechanics. Arm is short on the back side and long out front. High ¾ arm slot creates good depth and tilt to his 66-68 mph curveball. Also showed 73-75 mph changeup for strikes.

3. Jake Leger, OF/LHP, Lexington, 2019
5-foot-9, 160-pound outfielder ran a 7.13 60 yard sprint. Square tall stance at the plate, leg kick trigger with slight arm bar. Has ability to elevate the baseball with strong contact to pull side. In the outfield throws accurately to home a 77 mph. Aggressive routes and reads with a quick ¾ release. On the mound, topped out at 80 mph with his fastball. High ¾ arm slot, with a clean hand break from the back. Has a tendency to fall off towards his glove side. 63-66 mph breaking ball showed tight spin and depth down in the zone. 73-76 mph changeup was left up in the zone to his arm side. Intriguing prospect to follow for the 2019 class.

4. Jake Skala, RHP/1B, Kearney, 2018
6-foot-6, 190-pound RHP/1B ran a 7.72 60 yard sprint. At the plate, tall stance. Stride triggers  hands and tempo in swing. Line drive swing plane. Ground ball, infield pop-up contact. At first base has active feet and playable hands. Works through the ball from ground up. On the mound, throws from a mid ¾ arm action. Repeats delivery well. Clean hand break and long release out front. Tendency to lose leverage on his drive leg. Topped out at 81 mph with his fastball. 67-72 mph breaking ball has 11/5 spin with good tilt across the strike zone. Also showed feel for a 73-74 mph changeup thrown with fastball arm speed.

5. Kamen Mahoney, 3B/RHP, Concordia, 2017
6-foot-3, 215 pound two-way player ran a 7.2 60 yard sprint. Strong lean durable frame. At the plate, square stance, high hands, long slightly uphill swing plane. Showed some pop to the pull side. In the field, playable feet and hands. Fields the ball out front and throws from a buggy whip ¾ arm action. Some stiffness with actions. On the mound, has repeatable mechanics. Flies open on his front side. Arm has a tendency to drag on the backside. Long finish out front. Fastball has good height on a downhill plane. 70-73 mph breaking ball has tight spin and good depth across two planes. Showed feel for his 70-72 mph changeup with a heavy sinking action. 

6. Ryan Koski, OF, Kearney, 2017 
6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder participated in both the Central Nebraska Prospect ID and the PBR Border Battle. Koski ran his 60 both days in the 6.87-6.98 range. At the plate, square stance, strides to a semi-crouch wide base. Hands stays inside the ball, all fields line drive approach, slightly uphill swing plane. Posted an exit velocity of 89 mph off a tee. In the outfield, takes aggressive routes to the ball and has a quick transfer to a long ¾ arm slot. Topped out at 80 mph to home plate. In the infield, feet get heavy. Projects to a corner spot with hands. Threw across the infield at 69 mph. 

7. Trey Asher, LHP, Hastings St. Cecilia, 2018 
5-foot-11, 165-pound left-handed pitcher topped out at 75 mph with his fastball. Fastball runs to his arm side and was constantly thrown for strikes on both sides of the plate. Mechanically, repeats his low effort delivery consistently, eyes lose sight of target in balance position and throws slightly across his stride leg. Hands break clean with a slight stab on his backside. 62-63 mph breaking ball has tight spin and good depth and 65-66 changeup has a late sink/run.

8. Devin Safford, OF, Omaha North, 2017 5-foot-5, 150-pound outfielder ran a 6.8-7.2 between his two workouts at the Central Nebraska Prospect ID and PBR Border Battle. Small compact athletic build. At the plate, has a simple approach with a line drive swing plane. Uses all fields and goes with the pitch. Posted an exit velocity of 73 MPH off a tee. During the PBR Border Battle stole two bases and drew two walks in his plate appearances. In the outfield, shows aggressive routes to the ball, and a quick transfer to a high ¾ arm slot. Threw accurately at 75-76 MPH.

9. Gage Rose, RHP, Grand Island, 2018
5-foot-8 160-pound right-handed pitcher topped out at 81 mph with his fastball. Short compact build with repeatable athletic actions on the mound.  
His quick arm comes out clean from the back side with a long finish out front. Front side stays online and closed. Fastball has some life to arm side. 71-73 mph breaking ball has good tilt and tight spin on a 10/4 plane. Also showed a heavy 73-75 mph changeup thrown with fastball arm speed.

10. Kaden Hendrix, 2B/OF, Fremont, 2017
5-foot-11, 150-pound utility player ran a 7.06 60 yard sprint. Athletic build with room to carry more weight. At the plate, has a square upright stance. Leg kick triggers line
