Maine Connection Points Bowker To Georgetown

BOWDOINHAM, Me. - Being from Maine is not always a plus when it comes to college baseball recruitment, but it proved helpful to the cause for Cody Bowker.

“Coach (Edwin) Thompson is from Maine,” Bowker said of the new head coach at Georgetown where the Thornton Academy junior recently committed. “Being from Maine he knows it, which is why he was able to pursue me with more confidence.”

Thompson was not actually in charge of the program at Georgetown when he first saw Bowker.

“My travel team did videos over the summer,” the sixth-rated 2022 New England outfielder explained. “Coach Thompson was the head coach at Eastern Kentucky when he saw the videos and then he took over at Georgetown.”

Interest picked up once the change of coaches took place at the Big East Conference school.

“My travel team coach said Georgetown had an interest in you and would like to talk on the phone,” Bowker reflected. “That was the first time I talked to coach Thompson. He did a very good job of showing me what he could do and not do as far as being able to visit.”

There was a bond made according to the 47th-ranked New England junior.

“He liked my Maine connections,” Bowker said. “We work for what we get. We say that in Maine. Don’t take things likely. If there is something worth getting, work for it.

“He also liked what he saw in me in the batter’s box and on the mound.”

The potential to be a two-way player was certainly a bonus for the 6-1 180-pounder, who just turned 17 years of age on Dec. 18.

“I love the game so much,” Bowker said. “I just want to be part of winning and grinding. If it’s on the mound, in right field or center field, it’s what I’ll do and it’s a sure thing in the batter’s box.”

There was more that attracted Bowker to Georgetown than just the opportunity of being a two-way.

“They have the education I want,” Bowker said. “With coach Thompson and the other coaches they also have what I want which is to compete at a high level.”

Being part of a program with a new coach is something Bowker feels is beneficial as well.

“I like that Georgetown has not been at the top of the pack the last few years or even further,” Bowker noted. “Seeing coach Thompson and what he’s done to programs, he knows what he’s doing. He has a plan laid out and I’m super excited to be part of it.”

Boston College, Richmond and Northeastern were others with a strong interest in Bowker prior to the pandemic hitting, with Duke and Maine also in the mix at one point in time.

“From a young age I’ve played up a lot,” Bowker reflected. “I remember there was a kid in my town that committed to Bowden and that sparked me. I was 12-years-old and it just clicked.”

A strong work ethic helped along the way.

“I enjoy the process of practicing and working out in the gym,” Bowker pointed out. “That’s put me in the position I’m in. If you pick out one area, that’s my overall strength.”

The second-rated 2022 player from Maine believes he can be a major asset to the program at Georgetown.

“On the field I’m a very big competitor,” Bowker related. “It doesn’t matter what you have to do, as long as you get the W. I’m a leader that’s going to bring energy. I’ll push people to work hard both in the classroom and on the field.”

There have been a large number of influences that have helped along the way according to Bowker.

“My family is definitely at the top of the list, driving me around and my dad helping me with my game and seeing it from his angle” Bowker said. “All my coaches from high school to both travel teams have also helped along with all my friends I’ve played with. They’ve helped shape me into who I am. My teachers have also played a role in my leadership and proactivity.”

A visit to DC in early December helped seal the deal.

“I flew there and walked sound before making the decision,” Bowker said. “Even though nobody was there, I wanted to get a vibe of it. It was super good. It was the last thing I had to see before making the decision.”

Bowker, who carries a 4.03 GPA and is uncertain as to a college major, was ecstatic when the commitment became official.

“Every practice, every game, every pitch has gone into that moment,” Bowker said. “Being from Maine it’s a little rare to go south where there’s not two feet of snow on the ground. That’s attractive. Now I’m ready to go play and compete at the Division I level.”
