A little more than a month ago, the 2017 PBR Draft 100 made its debut. As we head into the offseason and look ahead to the spring, we have an update to the rankings.
The PBR Draft 100 ranks the top high school prospects eligible for the upcoming draft, including players outside of Prep Baseball Report’s coverage area of 34 states. This list is compiled after months of seeing games across the country and conversations with scouts and college recruiters.
The top spot remains controlled by RHP/SS Hunter Greene (Notre Dame HS, CA), a UCLA recruit with an electric arm on the mound and loose, easy swing at the plate. Ticking up a spot to No. 2 is SS/OF Royce Lewis (JSerra HS, CA).
OF/RHP Jordon Adell (Ballard HS, KY) moves up from No. 6 to No. 3. His tools are tantalizing and he remains raw, but he has shown improvements at the plate over the course of the summer and fall. RHP Blayne Enlow (St. Amant HS, LA) and OF Garrett Mitchell (Orange Lutheran HS, CA) held onto their rankings to round out the top five.
Sliding into the top 10 is C M.J. Melendez (Westminster Christian Academy, FL). He is the son of Florida International head coach Mervyl Melendez and committed to be a Panther. Melendez moved to Miami when his father left Alabama State for the new gig. He has always been known for his defensive prowess with his quick, athletic actions and rocket for an arm, but he has also shown marked improvements with the bat.
Other risers include RHP/OF Sam Carlson (Burnsville HS, MN), RHP Jack Leftwich (TNXL Academy, FL), RHP Wilberto Rivera (Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy, PR) and RHP Landon Leach (Pickering HS, ON).
Several players joined the PBR Draft 100 for the first time after strong outings in Jupiter. RHP Bryce Bonnin (Barbers Hill HS, TX) and RHP Spencer Strider (Christian Academy of Knoxville, TN) checked in at Nos. 54 and 55 respectively. Both have average frames and can sit in the low 90s while Bonnin mixes in a sharp, swing-and-miss slider. RHP Brad Dobzanski (Delsea Regional HS, NJ) also showed well at Jupiter and is now ranked No. 57. SS Chris Seise (West Orange HS, FL) debuted at No. 59.
