Prep Baseball Report

Get To Know: Maryland recruit, '18 OF Jack Herman (Eastern Regional HS, NJ)

TJ Hunt
Director, PBR New Jersey

PBR: Let’s start off with your commitment. Why did you choose Maryland? What did you see in Maryland that put the Terps over the top?

Herman: The reason I chose Maryland was because growing up It was always my favorite school. By getting an offer from them freshman year was a dream come true so committing was a no brainer. What put them over the top was their coaching staff, their facilities and the way they play the game there.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Herman: At the time I really was only talking to one or two schools at the time but nothing was serious.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Herman: The coaching staff first saw me at one of our team workouts for Bubba Baseball in 8th grade. Committing freshman year allowed me to create a great relationship with all the coaches and now we are closer than ever.

PBR: What are you looking forward to most about this spring/summer?

Herman: I am most looking forward to the high school season and competing with all of my friends for my last year. Come summer it would be an honor to get a chance to play professional baseball but if not I will be excited to start up my college career.

PBR: Eastern was considered one of, if not the top public school team in the state last year. What are your expectations this year, especially after losing a key bat in the middle of the order, Davis Schneider?

Herman: I believe that we will be just as competitive this year even without Davis. Losing him was a big, but everyone realizes that we will have to step it up this year to make up for everyone we lost last year, including Davis. Our conference is tough this year, and it will all come down to who’s the harder working team.

PBR: Other than your team, who is the team to beat in South Jersey this spring? Why?

Herman: The team to beat this year would have the be Shawnee. All the teams in south jersey are incredible this year, but Shawnee’s pitching and offense will be a challenge this year.

PBR: We are knee-deep into the off-season schedule. Tell us about your training, and spring preparation.

Herman: I train every weekday and hit every day I lift. I’ve really tried to step it up this year and work harder than I ever have. I need something to separate me from everyone else so I workout, hit and in general just train everyday. This is a big year coming up and I can’t wait to see what all this training does to my game this year.

PBR: If you were a baseball scout and just watched yourself play, what would that scouting report look like?

Herman: The scouting report would look like this...

  • Good bat, finds barrel well, has a lot of power but has more power to unlock over time.

  • Speed is good but still believe he could get faster.

  • Arm strength has increased over years but maybe so more MPH to come.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Herman: My most memorable baseball moment was beating Gloucester Catholic in probably the biggest tournament in South Jersey, the Diamond Classic. Eastern hasn't won it in over 50 years, so it was a great accomplishment.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

Herman: Best player would have to be (Red Sox 1st rounder in 2016, Barnegat HS, NJ grad) Jason Groome, who I also played with most my life.

PBR: If you could only pick one, who would be your biggest baseball influence and why?

Herman: Personally I look at everyone in the game of baseball as an influence one way or the other, I don’t have one single person who influences me.

PBR: Stirrups or regular pant?

 Herman: Regular

PBR: Do you have any pregame superstitions?

Herman: Not really, it kinda changes every season if I have any.

PBR: What would be your best walk out song? (Clean songs only, of course).

Herman: "Man of the Year" by Logic
