Preseason Team Preview: Red Bank Catholic

TJ Hunt

Scouting Director, New Jersey

High School: Red Bank Catholic

Head Coach: Buddy Hausmann (9th season, 149-59)

2015 Record: 20-9

The Caseys are a staple each year in all New Jersey rankings, and this year is no different.  With strong senior-leadership, and an exciting core of junior prospects, RBC looks like a solid sleeper pick in a loaded Shore Conference.  The pitching staff returns 15 of 20 wins from a year ago led by seniors RHP Jack Ipsen (Bryant), RHP John Poccia (DeSales), and LHP Justin Liggett.  The trio will keep the Caseys in any game, and will be aided by a great defensive club.  Up the middle, RBC is very strong.  Senior SS Evan Madigan (Bucknell) is one of the top athletes in the state as well as providing headaches for opposing pitchers at the top of the line-up and on the basepaths.  Senior RF Mike Spinelli and CF Dom Carabello have solid experience, and will be patrolling the outfield.  Managing the staff will be C Doug Facendo (Howard CC).  The senior is a strong backstop, and has the capability of taking a good staff and making it great.

The junior class brings a lot of excitement with it.  2B Aaron Ahn (Navy) and 3B Anthony DeRosa (Rutgers) are already committed to college, and along with Madigan provide for one of the best infields in the state.  The two juniors were top performers at last fall’s PBR Underclass Games and both show solid pop with the bat.  Ahn registered the top exit velocity at the event at 87 MPH while DeRosa was touted as having the best raw power.

With perhaps the most talent that the Shore Conference has ever seen on the mound in a single year, Coach Hausmann has confidence that his line-up, which returns 6 everyday starters from a year ago, will be up to the challenge.  They are extremely well coached, and with a warm spring expect the bats to heat up come tournament time.
