St. Joseph's Montvale Beats Bergen Catholic to Win Bergen Co. Tourney

DEMAREST -- St. Joseph’s Montvale defeated Bergen Catholic 3-1 in the Bergen County Tournament Finals. The Green Knights got on the board first, with a Matt Cocciadiferro�(NJIT) RBI single. Starting pitcher Devin Ortiz (Virginia) for SJR had a perfect game into the fifth inning, before surrendering a clean single to BC’s John Mead.
SJR got its two other runs from the long ball - with Cocciadiferro and �No. PBR NJ 2018 prospect Justyn-Henry Malloy (Vanderbilt) both taking BC RHP Nick Esposito deep to left field.
In the seventh, BC did not go quietly. The Crusaders had four hits in the inning - Vin Martin (UMass-Lowell) with an RBI infield single to put the Crusaders on the board. With one out and the bases loaded, Ortiz worked a strikeout and then got a ground out to end the game.
This was Devin Ortiz’s third win against Bergen Catholic this year, pitching masterfully in all three outings.
Cocciadiferro was named Tournament MVP, while Ortiz received the Top Pitcher Award. Both teams will play in the State Tournament this Tuesday.
