Underclass Games Review: Uncommitted 2017 1Bs

Sean McGrath
Scouting Director, New Jersey

So far, we have taken a look at scouting reports from thirteen uncommitted arms, seven uncommitted outfielders, and six uncommitted catchers from the 2017 class that participated in the Underclass Games in September. Today we will take a look at two 2017 first basemen from the event who are yet to make a college commitment.

Finn Hodgins, Saint Peter’s Prep
+
Finn Hodgins is a strong, physical first baseman from St. Peter’s Prep and Jersey Boyz baseball program. The right-handed hitter is 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. He posted an exit velocity of 91 miles-per-hour and an improved 7.74 60-yard dash time. He showed big time strength and power potential; drove many balls back to the fence. At first base, he moved well with proper footwork. His throws were of high intent and were on the bag at 86 MPH.

Eric Vaz, Seton Hall Prep
+
Vaz is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds; strong and lean. He is a 7.60 runner with a 79 mile-per-hour exit velocity. He hits from the right side from an athletic base with balance throughout his swing. His bat path is smooth and his lower half is explosive. He generates good bat spin on line drives, especially when he stays with a simple, up-the-middle approach. He was agile and moved well around the bag. His glove skills are solid and although his arm action is a bit long, he does show the ability to get rid of the ball quickly while making accurate throws.
