Division II Team Of The Week: Week 7 - CVCA

CUYAHOGA FALLS - After a 13-14 season a year ago, much improvement was expected out of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy this season. That has certainly been the case with a 23-2 start to the season for the Prep Baseball Report Division II Team of the Week.

“The resilience on this team has been a joy to coach,” explained CVCA head coach Jason Herblet. “I never feel like we are out of a game. This team battles until the last out.”

A sweep of Orville, 13-5 and 13-12, and a 9-1 win over Northwest last week just added to a season that has included two wins over Triway (12-0 and 6-0) and two over Metro Athletic Conference champion Norton (6-1 and 11-8) along with a 14-2 victory over Lake Catholic.

“We have hit the ball extremely well all season with a team batting average of .370,” noted Herblet, whose team even impressed in one defeat, a 7-4 loss to Walsh Jesuit, one of the top teams in the state in D-I.

Andrew Hendrickx, a Kent State commit, has been phenomenal pitching this season, with one no-hitter and three one-hit games. The senior, who this past week struck out 13 in a five-inning game against Northwest, has a 5-1 record (after a win on Monday) with a 0.241 ERA, striking out 64 in 29 innings. Additionally, Hendrickx carries a .500 average at the plate with six doubles, four triples and three home runs while driving in 34.

Trevor Vojtkofsky also carries a .500 average, recording five home runs, 11 doubles, 40 RBIs, 24 walks and 34 runs scored. Sophomore Joey Lehner is batting .452 with 14 doubles and 31 runs while senior Tyler Wise is hitting .400 with 30 runs scored.

Sophomore Julian Hernandez came up big this past week going 5-10 at the plate with eight RBIs, seven runs and three walks while junior Otto Rogers had a nice performance on the mound last week allowing no earned runs with five Ks in five innings.

“We need to continue to hit the ball well 1-9,” noted Herblet, whose Rams moved to 23-2 on Monday with a win over state-ranked Salem. “Our pitching needs to continue to command the zone and work ahead. If we stay consistent and continue to do what we do well, I like our chances of making a run in the tournament.”

Post-season action starts on Wednesday for CVCA with East Cleveland Shaw the opponent.
