Clayton Surrell, RHP/OF, Pickerington Central, Class of 2016

PBR: Why did you choose OSU?

Surrell: I've always been a Buckeye fan and hoped I would have an opportunity to play there. Location was a key factor, allowing my family and friends to watch me play. I love the coaching staff and the direction the program is heading. Also a degree from OSU would provide me with great opportunities in the future.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Surrell: Kent State, Coastal Carolina 

PBR: Where did Coach Beals first see you?  How did your relationship develop with them?

Surrell: Coach Beals first saw me at the Buckeye Elite tournament this summer, but Coach Stafford and Coach Hollick followed me around throughout the summer.  

PBR: You performed extremely well in some of the premier PBR events this summer.  How did that help your recruiting process?

Surrell:  The PBR events put me in front of many scouts and heightened my opportunity to play college baseball. 

PBR: How does it feel to have your college decision made at such an early age in your high school career?

Surrell:  It feels great to know where I'll be playing in college and challenges me to get better every day.

PBR: Ohio State is in your backyard.  How much of a role did distance play in your decision?

Surrell: It played a huge role in my decision. I wanted my family and friends to be able to watch me.

PBR:  Who do you play for in the summer and what is your most memorable experience?

Surrell: I play for Ohio Elite. Every time I take the field with my brothers' it's a memorable experience...we love taking what other teams want.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?

Surrell: I had a lot of expectations. I wanted to go to a big baseball program that also fit my academic needs.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Surrell: My dad had the biggest impact on me as a baseball player. He's the one that introduced me to the game. He has not only made me the ball player I am today, but has taught me many life lessons. I also must thank coaches Ratcliff, Valentine, Heilmann and Longbrake. 

PBR: What were your stats this spring season at Pickerington Central?

Surrell: Batting Avg .406...Slugging % .536...17 RBIs and was 2-0 on the mound with limited innings pitched.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter that you have faced in Ohio?

Surrell: Dieb Haber, my OEB teammate.
