WADSWORTH - Peter Jelenic felt there were a number of good reasons to make a college commitment to be part of a revived baseball program coming back to the University of Akron.

“The big thing for me was to stay close to home,” explained the incoming junior at Wadsworth High School. “It’s only a 30-minute drive for my parents. Another thing was that it’s been a goal of mine since I was young to play in the MAC. When the opportunity showed up, I couldn’t refuse.”

That came earlier in the summer when Akron, which will begin playing baseball this coming season after a four-year hiatus to help repair financial issues at the school, gave Jelenic an offer.

“I went to a camp there in February and they watched me a few times in the summer,” Jelenic noted. “They liked my range at short and my glove. They also liked my swing and how quick I was to the ball hitting-wise.”

There was a lot that stood out about Akron to Jelenic as well.

“I liked the vive of the coaches at the camp and how they ran it,” Jelenic said. “Before that when I was on the phone with the coaches, I felt like I was already part of the family and I hadn’t even met them in person.”

The 5-10 160-pounder, whose sister is an Akron graduate, has seen improvement in his game to get to the point of being a Division I recruit.

“I feel like I’m growing,” Jelenic said. “A couple years ago I was only 5-feet. I’ve also improved my power along the way as well as my arm strength.”

Ohio Dominican was the first to take notice of the left-handed hitting middle infielder, who has thought about playing baseball beyond high school since he was younger.

“Around the age of six or seven was the first time that I watched college baseball and I liked the feel of it,” Jelenic reflected. “Then I heard that people get drafted out of college and that’s been my dream to get drafted. I’ve always thought about playing at the highest level.
