LORAIN, OH - Lakewood St. Edward scored twice in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead over a scrappy Avon Lake team and held on over the last two innings to advance to today’s district championship game today at the Lorain PipeYard.

Avon Lake’s Logan Montague and St. Edward’s Mike Cuva battled over 6+ innings in a well-played, low scoring pitching battle. Montague pitched in and out of trouble the first two innings, but came away unscathed. St. Edward’s sophomore third baseman Joe Weisenseel led off the game with a line drive single to left and senior shortstop Will Devito followed with another line drive single to left field. Montague then bore down to get out of the jam with no runs scored. In the second inning a hit batter and two walks loaded the bases for the Eagles of St. Ed’s but Montague got a big out to end the inning.

Cuva meanwhile, was breezing through the Shoremen line-up carrying a no-hitter into the top of the fifth inning when Enzo Forlini lined a pitch into left center field. The right handed Cuva quickly got the next two hitters to move into the sixth inning with the lead.  Despite not having a hit, the Shoremen managed to score a run in the second inning after senior shortstop Matt Gottshall walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on senior center fielder David Winkel’s RBI sacrifice fly to right center field, giving the Shoremen a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles finally broke through to score in the bottom of the fifth inning after stranding seven runners on base through the first four innings. Devito singled to center and junior center fielder Kyle Hegedus singled to left to start the inning. Junior left fielder Darien Knowles advanced them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Senior first baseman Todd Price then hit a sacrifice to right field to score Devito with the tying run. Right fielder Shayne Erny then got a big single up the middle scoring Hegedus from third with the eventual winning run.

Montague continued to battle for the Shoremen, who got the tying run to second base with one out in the seventh and final inning, on a walk to Forlini and a pinch hit single by junior Matt Pechaitis. Third baseman Weisenseel then came over to the mound to record two straight strikeouts to record the save for the Eagles.

No. 23 ranked St. Edward (16-7) plays No. 38 ranked Amherst Steele this afternoon at five for the district title game at Lorain PipeYard.
