PBR: Why did you choose Otterbein?

Lanter: I chose Otterbein for a few reasons. The most important factor in my decision was academics, which I felt were the best at Otterbein. The baseball program is strong and only getting better. Also, the facilities were very nice, and the campus was warm and welcoming. Overall, it just felt like the right place to spend my next 4 years.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Lanter: I was considering Tiffin, Ohio Wesleyan, Bluffton and Defiance.

PBR: Where did the Coach Powell first see you?

Lanter: Coach Powell saw me for the first time when my school team won the District Title game at Otterbein last May.

PBR: Otterbein is very close to home, almost in your own backyard.  How much of a role did distance play in your college decision?

Lanter: It played a considerable role. I have a 10 year old brother, and I wanted him to have a chance to be able to see me play as he grows up. I also want to be around to watch him grow and mature as a young man. The proximity to downtown is convenient, and I like having the option to easily come home to spend time with my family and friends.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Lanter: Coach Powell has talked a lot about my versatility. He expects me to come in and compete for a starting position either behind the plate or at one of the corner outfield positions.

PBR:  What team do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this past summer?

Lanter: I played for Team Columbus 18U this past summer. I do not think there was a single moment that was more memorable than the rest this past summer. The entire experience was great, as I grew really close with a quality group of guys, and was able to play the sport that I love.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Lanter: My family has had the biggest impact on me. They have always been supportive and pushed me to pursue my goal of playing in college. My father especially, who has spent countless hours helping me get better, for which I am very thankful. Coach Gussler has taught me more things than I can list. The most important values he has shown me are the importance of hard work when no one is watching, and of cherishing every day on a baseball field. Also, all of the employees of Big League Baseball School have always helped by pushing me to get better.

PBR: What were your stats this last season at Thomas Worthington?

Lanter: I hit around .300 with 20 RBI’s, 20 Runs scored and fielded at a .989 percentage.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher that you have faced in Ohio?

Lanter: My school ball teammates Nick Pauley and Sam Ankrom always give me tough battles in the preseason scrimmages. From another school, I would have to say that it would be Chandler Day from Watkins Memorial. His fastball was heavy with good arm side run.
