Ontario Blue Jays 17U vs St. James Saints - 3.13.18

The 17U Ontario Blue Jays avoid late scare to take 11-10 victory. Justin Bradt was impressive through 5 scoreless innings using his fastball on both sides of plate to attack hitters. With an early walk and hbp it was looking like it may be a short day for the left-hander as the Saints were gaining early momentum until catcher Blake Buckell hosed a potential base stealer for the 2nd out of the inning and Bradt was able to get out unscathed.

The bats were relatively quiet through 4 innings for both teams, the Blue Jays pieced together a hit here and there but were unable to cash in with runners in scoring position. Joel McKnight's triple in the right-center gap seemed to ignite the offense in the 5th followed by Khalid Collymore who had multiple hits in the leadoff spot including a double off the right field wall. The pair lead the way on defense as well McKnight continued to showcase his speed and reads off the bat in center field going to get a deep ball in the left-center gap to end a potential rally in the 3rd inning. Collymore showed his arm strength at 2nd base on a ball hit up the middle that he fielded backhanded on the run making a throw across his body for the out at 1st.

Nick Castonguay entered the game in the 6th inning on the mound and was able to work for 3 quick outs and keep the shutout intact, the 7th inning was a different story as he struggled to find the zone and the Saints started to find barrels on his fastball. The Blue Jays then went to Josh Golden who was eventually able to close the door after a wild that saw St. James bring the game winning run to the plate.

Justin Bradt LHP / 1B / Pearson, ON / 2019

Report: 6-foot, 190-pounds, uncommitted. Bradt works from a high ¾ slot and gets good down angle on fastball that sat 77-79. His breaking ball had 1/7 shape t 72-73 with a loose action and good arm speed, changeup at 65-67 with late sink, he used these pitches to set up his fastball on the inside half very effectively. He got off to a slow start in the first having some trouble finding his release point on fastball, he was able to make adjustments in the 2nd and cruised through 5 scoreless innings.
