Ontario Insider: 2015 Baseball Canada Cup Championship Day 1

The 2015 Baseball Canada Cup Championship kicked off yesterday in Saskatoon with Ontario taking on Quebec and Alberta to open up round robin play. We take a brief look at stats and scores from the day's events.

ONTARIO vs. QUEBEC

Committed Canisius righty Mitchell Clark was handed the start for Ontario’s game one matchup versus a strong, disciplined, and well coached team out of Quebec. After giving up a two-spot in the first, Clark seemed to settle in and put up three scoreless before being relieved by Niagara university commit Matt Brash.

Brash came in to work a scoreless fifth working around a walk and a balk call, but an error, coupled with two base hits and another balk call would put Quebec up 4-1 on be enough to hold on in a 4-2 victory.

Ontario put together seven hits with Brad Aldred going 2-3 and Luke Turino and Ethan Hunt scoring both the runs.

Gibson Krzeminski and Northern Kentucky commit Shane Paradis drove in both runs for the Ontario squad.

ALBERTA vs. ONTARIO

Game two saw Ontario get out into the driver’s seat with a 2-0 lead thanks to back to back singles by Eric Thrower and Turino set the table for a one out double by Aldred. That’s all Ontario would need as left-handers Niall Windeler and Travis Keys combined on a two-hit shutout.

Windeler ended up going five, striking out four while issuing only one walk. Keys came in for the final six out and didn’t surrender a hit, also striking out 4 in the contest.

Aldred again went 2-3 with a double and three RBIs while Thrower and Turino each had a hit and came across twice to score.

Hunt added the only other RBI that Aldred did not get, coming with two out in the fifth to go along with a run scored and stolen base.

Ontario will play team British Columbia tomorrow as it is their only game of the day at 1:30pm in Saskatoon, which would be a two hour difference with it being 3:30pm Ontario time.
