Oregon All-Star Series: South - Hitters

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

This past weekend we were at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State University for the 2019 Oregon All-Star Series. The 2-game set showcases elite senior players from the 5A and 6A classifications across the state. Notable alumni of the event include Dale Murphy, Scott Brosius, John Jaha, Harold Reynolds and Adley Rutschman. More information on the rich tradition of the series can be found HERE

2019 was the first opportunity Prep Baseball Report Oregon had to cover and scout the event. So far we have released video and stats on the pitchers for both the North and the South. We continue our scouting coverage with reports and video highlights from the hitters on the South roster.

South-Hitters

Decker Stedman, LHP/1B, Thurston (Oregon commit)
Athletic, balanced swing with above avg bat speed. Combines height and uphill swing path to create considerable leverage, which leads to impressive pull-side power. Loose, rhythmic hands that sync with leg-kick and forward stride. Defensively saw limited action at 1B. Has the athleticism to move to corner OF if needed. Also showed well on the bump, reaching up to 86 with his FB. Between winning the HR derby and his in-game performance, Stedman had arguably the most impressive weekend of any player there.

Jayden Frank, RHP/OF, North Bend (Lane CC commit)
Projectable frame with wide set upper body. Frank hits from a tall, upright stance with a high finish after contact. Showed off some pull-side pop during BP. Wiry frame that projects to add more power. Defensively the arm strength profiles well to RF. Has the actions and size to fill out and stick in a corner spot long-term.

Ryan Brown, RHP/INF, South Salem (Oregon State commit)
Impressive athlete with strong, repeatable actions on both sides of the ball. Simply put, Brown can throw really hard and hit the ball really hard. What role he ultimately ends up in is difficult to say because he has the raw tools to make either work. Offensively he hits from a relaxed, open stance with loose hands. Barrel stays on plane and allows him to hit for power to all fields. Tough to say where he profiles on defense but the size/arm strength (90 mph off the mound) could fit nicely in RF after he grows into his frame.

Ben Leid, C, Crescent Valley (Wenatchee Valley commit)
This was our 2nd look at Leid. For scout blog notes from earlier this spring, click HERE. The big framed catcher continued to quality catch and throw actions behind the dish to go along with a swing path that projects to add power as he develops.

Emiliano Alarcon, C, Central, Linn-Benton CC commit
5-10, 180 pounds with present strength in his frame. Alarcano showed consistent feel for the barrel during BP with a balanced, level swing. Produced gap-to-gap power with a short, balanced load. Defensively the actions are quick and compact behind the plate. Presents a quiet target and shows control of a soft glove hand while receiving.

Tysen Scott, 1B, Bend
Big, physically developed frame at 6-4, 245 pounds. Sets up in narrow, slightly open stance. Hands stay quiet as he gets into forward stride. Hits against firm front side to create lift in swing. Flashed some pull-side pop in BP. Power translated well in-game. Moves well around the bag at 1B. Plenty of arm strength to handle all the required throws.

Michael Soper, SS, Sprague, Linn-Benton CC commit
Showed an easy, fluid swing with a high finish during BP. Stays tall throughout while holding finish thru contact. Has a lean, projectable frame capable of gaining more strength. Flashed balanced, controlled actions at SS in pre-game. Sure-handed type of defender who should handle all the routine plays. Consistent performer who always found ways to contribute over the course of the weekend.

Will Tsukamaki, SS, North Salem, Skagit Valley commit
Earlier this spring we saw Tsukamaki at the Lake Oswego jamboree. For those scout notes, click HERE. Continued to show a consistent approach at the plate with the ability to produce hard contact to all fields. Contact type approach with a controlled, level swing. Defensively flashed balanced, controlled actions at SS with quick feet. Avg arm across the diamond that should add more strength as he develops.

Owen Bischoff, SS, Silverton, Yakima Valley commit
Athletically built at 5-10, 170 with a frame that still projects. Swing stays flat thru the zone with a level finish. Hands stay loose before working quick to the ball with low effort bat speed. Looks capable of tapping into more power down the road. Defensively, Bischoff is light on his feet while moving laterally with short, quick arm action. Capable of handling multiple INF positions.

Jared Gordon, INF, Century, Yakima Valley commit
This was our 2nd look at Gordon. We saw him in a match-up against Liberty. For those scouting notes, click HERE. Hits from a crouched, athletic stance and sprayed contact to all fields during BP. Hands stay inside of the ball well and allow him to repeatedly find the barrel. Has some defensive versatility in his game and showed the ability to handle both INF and OF duties. Overall, Gordon is a strong, athletic player with the chance to impact the game in multiple ways.

Caleb Beach, SS, West Albany, Chemeketa CC commit
5-11, 165 pounds with a wiry frame. Beach showed a slightly open stance from the left-side with athletic actions in the box. ‘Handsy’ type of swing that generates quick barrel whip thru the zone. Quick hands on defensive with athletic actions throughout the fielding process. Stays balanced and smooth while moving laterally.

Ryan Sandoval, OF, North Medford, Umpqua CC commit
Strong build at 6-0, 180 pounds. Hits from a tall, upright stance in the box. Noticeable strength in hands/forearms at contact. Consistently produced hard contact with a flat barrel path and level swing after contact. Quality actions on defense in the OF. Moves well with clean, repeatable arm action.

Colton Smith, OF, McMinnville
Multi-sport athlete that is committed to Linfield College to play football next year. Balanced set-up in the box with a contact approach. Low effort swing. Lets ball travel and keeps hands tight to his body. Long, easy strides in the OF. Throws from a lower slot with a loose, clean arm action that consistently produced accurate throws.

Ruben Cedillo, OF, Central, Linn-Benton CC commit
One of the most impressive and consistent offensive performers on the weekend, Cedillo flashed advanced barrel control to go with quality bat speed. Plenty of strength in his frame at 5-8, 185 pounds. Keeps everything simple and compact with a short, powerful swing to the ball. Maintains a disciplined approach that should allow him to continue producing at the next level. On defense, showed short, quick footwork in the OF. Throws were accurate coming out of short arm action. Mature player who has a great feel for the speed of the game.
