Humenay Happy To Find Virginia Commonwealth

BEACONSFIELD, Quebec - Living in the province of Quebec made finding the right college difficult for Justin Humenay.

“It’s a really tough thing,” related Humenay, a recent commit to Virginia Commonwealth. “There are not a lot of coaches looking and scouting there. Most of the kids there only speak French.”

It meant a lot of work on his own.

“The only option to get seen was playing on ABC travel team but their main focus is not school and it was very expensive,” pointed out the Taft School senior, who carries a 3.55 GPA. “They didn’t showcase for academic schools. So I decided to find a showcase to go to because I needed something to get my feet wet. That was PBR. It was eye-opening for me.”

Participating in the New England Top Prospect Games in June helped put the 6-0 180-pound right-handed pitcher on the map, even living on an island just outside of Montreal.

“PBR was really a good step for me in getting my feet wet because I was late to the game,” Humenay said about his recruitment. “It allowed me to see what scouts thought of me.”

Schools like Holy Cross, Boston College and Davidson showed an interest, but the desire to attend a college with an engineering program limited his choices.

“I really wanted to go to an academic school,” Humenay noted.

That is when an Ivy League school came to the front.

“Columbia was really interested in me,” Humenay said. “I was almost dead set on that. My grades were fine and everything seemed perfect, but then they stopped communicating with me so I had to find another place to play baseball.

“I was kind of stressing,” admitted Humenay, who began looking at Maine along with Quinnipiac and Harford. “If nothing else happened, I was going to go to Maine.”
